Ive never actually written one but I think you can be very flexible with it? I'd say waking up after being drunk would be different from waking up planned.

But I suggest don't make the character suddenly flings themselves up when waking up from nightmare, it's actually not realistic I think

Lots of ways to write waking up, some stuff you could describe:

Blinking awake, eyes adjusting, morning light, yawns and stretches. Maybe rolls back over, not ready to get up. If they’re with someone else, snuggling up to them? Waking them up?

No birdsong in RW seemingly, maybe mornings are especially quiet, as everything has hidden from the rain?

Everything damp and dripping. Mornings are sparkly and the air is thick and humid

Then when you see the little lights swimming in your eyes and the sort of haze between your ears, you'll know you've done it :)

Well, if you just knock yourself out, then you miss the peak concussion feelings

plus, if you're protected, you can basically concuss yourself repeatedly before you feel any pain at all, thus making it easier to do so

but with gloves, it's possible to be concussed numerous times in a single fight, which is where compounding concussion damage (the good shit) sets in

Thus, for optimal brain damaging, a helmet should be used

and it'll hurt less so you'll be less hesitant
