also, uh, i need to figure out what the fuck is going on with puppet internals

im thinking they have a layer of organic skin that covers most of their body (except for their eyes and antennae). this is why the color on moon and pebbles only fades, doesn't chip. the organics are trying their best to maintain the color. the skin has tiny sensors all over it that allows for the puppet to processs and feel temperature, pressure, and pain. there is also some pearl writing/reading tech in their hands, although writing to a pearl takes a lot more energy than reading to it. there is a layer just under the skin which hardens automatically with incoming trauma

under the skin, i'm thinking that they have organic/synthetic muscles that are able to operate almost exclusively under electrical impulse. these muscles are able to be very precise in ideal conditions. if the iterator were to work out the puppet, these muscles are able to strengthen over time. however, normal iterator conditions usually means that they won't have much a need or want to do more than stand or walk. (this detail is partly for my fic )

then there is the endoskeleton, made from titanium. the main frame of the skeleton is hollow, with wires and repair microbes living in the inside. this allows for mild to moderate damage to be healed over time, although there is only so much that the microbes can do.

in the chest, there is a mini rarefaction cell, meant only for emergencies to keep the puppet functional. the head, of course, has the antennae and eyes, which are mostly mechanical. the head also contains the olfactory sensor, speaker, and central processing unit, although the CPU is dedicated almost entirely to maintaining and processing the condition of the puppet. there is very little actual processing or storage that goes on in the puppet, with the task delegated to the rest of the superstructure.

We've got game threads in #offtopic-agenderal and a few inactive ones that aren't related but nothing quite similar to what you've described. Well, it is and it isn’t. You run for a group of people long enough, and they start to become like characters in your story: you can’t make them do what you want… but you can make them want to do what you want, if you know how to pull the right levers.

And yes, this is me admitting that I use a little bit of psychological manipulation on my friends when we play D&D, but I have told them about it beforehand and it’s all in good fun.

But for real, do you have ever little choice planned out for your characters when you sit down to write? I don’t. Only the important stuff. And if you can understand your players and their characters you understand how they’ll make the important choices. Sometimes.

In my experience with things that aren't really TTRPGs but extremely similar enough to TTRPGs that I can say it's probably the same:

The way I handle stories in videogames is already pretty much to how you would a TTRPG I think. Instead of having certain scenes I know I want to play out in certain ways (that's called railroading lol) I try to make scenes with multiple different outcomes and then have sort of an idea of what kinds of scenes could come next from a certain outcome

different types of people will play in different kinds of ways, so I account for everyone by instead planning general 'ideas' of routes

I don't mean making a videogame story is like making a TTRPG story, I just meant that the way I personally handle videogame stories is like how I handle the other thing's stories which is also how I think most people handle TTRPG stories

Recently I had a villain for a TTRPG-like thing go through a character arc in what I thought was a really satisfying way

they were a crusader-type 'holier-than-thou' sort of character who worked for some sort of evil empire

the players managed to talk them down from fighting them by having them figure out that they are more than a tool for war

like, they just never really thought about doing anything other than fighting

I thought it was cool

it also produced a really raw quote that got fire-reacted 3 times :]
