Chapter One: Directive
Embers Upon a Spire, Nine Signals

NS: You know, I've been wondering.
EUS: About?
NS: Just how long it's been. How long we've endured these cycles.
NS: With nothing to really show for it.
EUS: I think we've accomplished a lot!
NS: Like?
EUS: How about when we tricked Twilight into believing you had transferred your conciousness into one of your own overseers?
NS: Comeon, be serious.
EUS: I am! Life is only as good as you make it out to be, is it not?
NS: Perhaps. But one's life is also their story to the world, and how great an impact they made to it.
NS: It may have been a fun and enjoyable prank, but it held no weight. It accomplished nothing.
NS: In the end, you're only remembered by your achievements.
EUS: Alright, then what about Twilight's blackout?
EUS: If it weren't for you, her communications would have gone dark long ago.
NS: All I did was send basic instructions for realigning her data conduits.
NS: Hardly anything worth mentioning.
EUS: I doubt she feels that way.
NS: Granted, but I'm talking about AMBITION. The desire to do something greater than oneself. Greater than us.
NS: A true accomplishment, one worthy of the whole world.
EUS: So ascension?
NS: That's the prime example, but it could be anything really.
NS: We've lived so long, yet all we've really done is.. Exist.
NS: That, and solve our own tiny problems.
NS: There's nothing for us to show for ourselves!
EUS: I never took you to be so prideful.
NS: Is that wrong?
EUS: I suppose not. You wish to be recognized for your efforts, to be remembered for something great.
EUS: I think that's a feeling we all share deep down.
EUS: But I also think it's equally important to enjoy the smaller things in life.
EUS: Whether it be a harmless joke, a philosophical conversation of life, or pursuing the answer to our Great Problem.
EUS: I take pride and joy in them equally.
EUS: Because ALL of it defines who I am, and that's what I want to be remembered by. Not just the parts where I happened to be useful.
NS: ..I never thought about it quite like that.
NS: I think I'll try looking at things your way, give it an optimistic approach.
NS: Thanks for brightening my day.
EUS: I do my best!
NS: Oh, and speaking of Twilight.. She's been trying to contact me for a while now.
EUS: You've been ignoring her?
NS: More like ignoring everyone. Haven't been too talkative recently.
EUS: Makes me feel special.
NS: You're okay. Easy to talk to.
NS: Not to mention I couldn't ignore you even if I wanted. You'd just force a private broadcast.
EUS: True.
NS: Alright.. I guess I'll go see what she wants. I'll chat with you later.
EUS: Tell her I said hi!
NS: Will do.

RI: No fake names? That's no fun.
DT: Sorry, was trying to keep this short. I have a question for you two.
NS: What's up?
DT: Do you have any idea on how to create a one-way containment field?
DT: One where I can freely introduce new materials, but is otherwise completely isolated from outside influence.
RI: Simulations don't work?
DT: No. Too many variables, I'm getting a different result every time.
NS: Why can't you just use an isolated chamber? Sounds like it's perfect for the job.
DT: I.. Can't. This has to be COMPLETELY isolated from ANY influence outside my own. That includes the chamber walls.
RI: What if you took the pattern of a normal gravitational generator, inverted it, then looped it on itself?
RI: I think that might get the result you're looking for. Or something close to it.
DT: That.. Just might work.
RI: Thanks a lot 'finity!
USER [DISCARDED TWILIGHT] DISCONNECTED
RI: ..Glad I could help?
RI: What do you think she's up to?
RI: ...Signal?
NS: I don't understand.
RI: What?
NS: Twilight's need for a one-way field. It makes no sense.
NS: Of course simulations have their limits, but the chamber walls?
NS: What effect could that possibly have?
RI: Depends on the experiment really.
NS: But by that logic, shouldn't the very atmosphere be a variable? Or even the lack thereof?
RI: Hm, that's a fair argument.
RI: Perhaps she's just trying to create as stable a scenario as possible?
NS: Maybe.. But I feel like there's a different reason...
NS: Maybe it's not stability she's looking for. Maybe she's...
NS: ..I'm going go look into this. I'll talk to you later.
USER [NINE SIGNALS] DISCONNECTED
RI: ..Alright.
RI: Well now I just feel left out...

DT: Sig, I'm really busy right now. Can't this wait?
NS: No, it can't. What do you think you're doing?
DT: What do you mean?
NS: No one else may have noticed what's been going on, but don't play dumb with me.
NS: Between that odd request and the vast amount of water you're using, It's pretty clear that you're up to something.
DT: I'm just testing some new formulae, is that such a big deal?
NS: Twilight please, I'm asking because I'm concerned.
DT: And I'm telling you there's nothing to be concerned about.
NS: Just tell me what you're doing then!
DT: Fine!
DT: If you really must know, I'm attempting to fuse various different types of organics and inorganics together by means of cold welding.
DT: That's why I asked for a means to create a one-way containment field.
DT: With the extreme conditions I have set, any contact with chamber walls will cause accidental welding, ruining the experiment.
DT: Happy?
NS: ..That's it?
DT: YES, THAT'S IT.
NS: Why didn't you just say that in the first place then!?
DT: Because I don't want to spread information that could be entirely wrong!
DT: The least I can do is prove my damn thesis!
NS: ..I suppose that's fair.
NS: I'm.. sorry. For doubting you.
DT: It's fine. Just.. Please leave me to my work.
DT: I'll message you in a couple of cycles.

TSF: Question.
SSW: Answer?
TSF: Has anyone here given up on the Great Problem?
TT: Who HASN'T?
SSW: ^ ^ ^
TSF: You guys don't try at ALL anymore?
SSW: I mean sure, every now and then an idea comes to mind.
SSW: So I test it. It fails. Then I find myself back here in a group chat.
TT: You've got your own little cycle going on huh?
SSW: Basically.
TSF: I guess it's more-or-less the same for me.
TSF: Makes me wonder if there's anyone out there that's still honestly trying.
TT: If there is, Good luck to them.
SSW: Honestly. I can't imagine any possibility of someone finding a solution at this point.
SSW: Or even coming close for that matter.
TSF: Yea, between all of us iterators and all the time that we've operated for, what possibilities are there that we HAVEN'T explored?
TT: I'd guess nothing except the extremes.
TSF: Extremes?
TT: Operating in violations of the taboo.
TSF: Oh.. You think anyone's tried that?
TT: I hope not. I certainly won't.
TSF: Why not?
TT: It's illegal?
TSF: Funny.
TSF: But actually though, why not try?
SSW: Permanent exhaustion and ascension are not synonymous my friend.
SSW: If you're violating the taboo, you're by nature doing something EXTREMELY dangerous.
SSW: Something where, if one thing goes wrong JUST enough, you're done.
SSW: No more feeling, no more thoughts, no more consciousness.
SSW: And there's a lot that can go wrong.

EUS: I'm telling you, it's not possible.
SW: Yes it is!
EUS: No it's not!
RI: I also don't think it's possible.
SW: Come on, not you too!
< USER [CRAFTED IMPERFECTION] CONNECTED >
SW: Craft, please! Help me out here!
CI: Huh?
SW: Is it or is it not possible to create a shared consciousness link!?
CI: Like.. having two iterators share the same mental dataspace? Simultaneously?
EUS: Yes, exactly that.
CI: Uh... Maybe..?
CI: I mean.. Both iterators would have to be compatible to each other, along with needing to be built with that exact feature in mind. Both requirements that none of us meet.
EUS: Yep, not to mention the processing power that would be required to stabilize the constantly diverging mentalities.
CI: Though it could theoretically double the capabilities of the primary iterator. Granted, it'd be extremely dangerous too.
EUS: I think it'd be more practical to just produce a more powerful iterator at that point.
CI: Yea.
SW: But it IS possible though? I win?
EUS: It's theoretically PLAUSIBLE, and definitely impossible for our design.
SW: So.. A tie?
EUS: Sure, why not.
CI: ...Anyways, how goes things everyone?
EUS: Not much, trying to come up with a new game.
CI: Ooh, another one? I loved the last one you made!
SW: What's it gonna be like?
EUS: Well, not to sure what the genre will be specifically, but I want to make it an open-broadcast design.
EUS: One where everyone in the local group can join and play together.
RI: That sounds awesome! Need any help?
EUS: Nah I'm good, I want this one to be a surprise. Thanks though!
RI: Well, offer's always on the table.
RI: Anyways, I'm gonna go see what's going on in the other chats.
RI: Some of these guys have been up to some crazy stuff! Never gets old.
EUS: Alright, see ya around!
RI: Later!
< USER [REACHES TO INFINITY] DISCONNECTED >
CI: Speaking of crazy, hasn't Twilight been up to some pretty intense stuff herself?
EUS: Yea, Sig said she's testing some new ideas, though didn't tell me what specifically.
EUS: Whatever it is though, it sure requires a lot of water. I'm not sure if the ocean's gonna survive at this rate...
SW: It isn't messing with your supply though right? I know you guys are pretty close.
EUS: Yea I'm good. She'd have to at least double her current intake for it to affect me in any meaningful way.
SW: The benefits of being out in the ocean huh?
EUS: I guess so.
CI: Anyways, think we should check up on Twilight? She's been dark for quite a while now.
SW: Yea, probably should. I'll go give her a call. Later!
EUS: See ya!
CI: Bye!

DT: Killing it? Oh yes, many times.
DT: But I'm not allowed to do that.
SW: Not allowed? What do you..?
SW: ..Oh. Oh no...
SW: You tried breaking the taboo.
SW: ..Why!? Why would you do something so reckless!?

SW: That's more-or-less her current situation.
CI: By the cycles, that's awful...
RI: Is there anything she can do to stop it?
SW: Right now she's encased it with as much structural material as possible, to prevent it from reaching anything important.
SW: But with how fast it's growing.. I can't imagine that will last very long.
EUS: And you're saying she can't kill it?
SW: No, it has her biologic signature. So she isn't allowed to harm it in any way.
EUS: So the very taboo that's supposed to "protect" us is now working against us?
SW: Essentially.
CI: We'll need to find a way to bypass the taboo then.
RI: Much easier said then done.
NS: What about grey areas?
RI: What areas?
SW: He's talking about actions that would normally be banned by the taboo, but might be allowed depending on the circumstances.
RI: What kind of circumstances?
NS: It'd have to be something dangerous enough to require prompt action regardless of losses.
CI: A "sacrifice for the greater good" kind of situation? Could work.
RI: But what kind of situation can we forcibly create for that to work?
NS: That, I'm.. Not quite sure on.
CI: Well.. Either way, It doesn't seem like anyone's got a better idea.
CI: So I guess it's time for us to get to work.

Fake it till you make it 👌
Same for meeee. Getting positive comments and I’m like :3 I have literally no idea what I’m doing but thanks!
Wait so this is about the "death" of Embers, but so far Twilight seems to be the one in trouble. Unless shit hits the fan hard
Also is it just me or did embers go from being abbreviated as EUS to EOS midway trough?
Btw I really like the writing
Nope definitely not I have no clue what you're talking about
For sure I wouldnt make a mistake like that during my random 2am writing sessions
for sure
Ohh, I really like the premise here. ||Assume with the timestamp that this situation does cover the first case of the rot ... given we go on in the canon to Pebbles trying the very same I come to the conclusion that this will go as poorly as can be and will get swept under the carpet.
...
Wait, Twilight has, but the name?|| Hmm, ok, not that straightforward then. I am curious:3
Seeeee this is good as heck
I wonder if Iterators can take control of other cans by force.
A selfish one might decide to take another Iterator’s can under their control for dangerous experiments.
Also, totally not just writing this to access this place.

CI: I agree, I don't think a simple cleanse should be taking this long.
NS: I think this is anything but "simple", Craft.
CI: Granted, but we're talking 70+ cycles here.
RI: Exactly! I feel like something's wrong.
NS: I think you guys are being a bit paranoid.
NS: If something WERE to actually go wrong, I'm sure Twilight would find a way to let us know.
RI: But what if she CAN'T? What if her comms never came back? Or worse?
NS: Okay, let's say something's wrong then.
NS: What then, Infinite?
NS: How does our oh-so-honorably named "Council of Heroes" come swooping in to the rescue?
CI: Proposed organisms?
NS: Oh?
NS: You'd ask a small creature, with limited intellect, to not only travel a ludicrous distance in a hostile environment, but also to fix a creation that took millions of sophisticated minds to fabricate?
NS: All by itself?
NS: Ridiculous.
RI: So you'd do nothing!?
NS: Of course I'd do something!
EUS: Okay, time out!
EUS: I get it, we're in the dark and getting frustrated.
EUS: But remember, Horizon said it's a process that'll take some time to complete.

DT: Yes Infinity, I am f i n e.
DT: You really don't need to check up on me every single cycle.
RI: I know! I know...
RI: It's just.. We couldn't really do anything before...
RI: All we did was wait and hope for the best.
DT: Wasn't that because of Ember though?
DT: From what I understand, you were fighting to take action the whole time.
DT: Not that I'm slandering him or anything, since I WAS fine.
RI: I mean yes.. But he was also completely right.
RI: He was patient and placed his trust in you, either to fix the issue or to let us know otherwise.
RI: Meanwhile I just assumed the worst would happen, and didn't really bother to think things through.
RI: It's only because of Signal that I waited so long.
RI: If I had actually tried something.. Who knows how badly I could have messed things up?
DT: Infinity, relax.
DT: You're acting like you almost singlehandedly ended the world.
DT: Look, I can't deny that the process took longer than expected. MUCH longer.
DT: To the point that you and the others started to worry.
DT: It was a stressful situation, that I put you all in.
DT: Whether you decided to take action or not, is not something I could fault you for.
DT: There was no "right" or "wrong" decision.
DT: And in the end, it's in the past and doesn't matter anymore right?
RI: I suppose so, but still...
DT: If you're still down about it, you can do me a favor then.
RI: A favor?
DT: Go talk to Ember.
DT: From what I've heard you guys haven't been talking since I got back.

EUS: You all trusted me as the senior, and I did absolutely nothing.
EUS: Meanwhile, Infinite was willing to do ANYTHING, and I just.. shut him down.
EUS: Eventually just avoided him entirely...
NS: Is there anything wrong with that though?
NS: I mean sure, it probably wasn't the BEST idea to ignore him like that.. But look how things turned out.
NS: Twilight's back and everything's fine now.
EUS: Yes, That's true.. But that's only because of Twilight.
EUS: If anything had gone wrong, without us knowing...
EUS: I would've just waited until it was too late.
EUS: In the end, I just got lucky.
EUS: In any other situation, his decision would've been the correct one.
EUS: Not that it was even wrong to begin with!
NS: But it's not about right or wrong, Ember.
NS: There were four main outcomes to this situation:
1. Things got worse because we waited.
2. Things got worse because we DIDN'T wait.
3. We waited, and Twilight manages to fixes it herself.
and 4. We DIDN'T wait, and somehow save Twilight.
NS: Did we know which choice to make? No!
NS: Does it matter what choice we made? No!
NS: You know what DID matter, though? The fact the we all made the SAME choice.
NS: If everyone had gone off in their own direction, doing what they thought was right.. It would have been utter chaos.
NS: In one way or another, things would have gotten bad real quick.
NS: But because WE made the decision to wait, things turned out okay.
NS: "Right" and "wrong" have nothing to do with it.
NS: It's these kind of situations where you need Unity, not a vigilante hero.
EUS: ..Thanks, Sig.
EUS: I think I needed that.
NS: Don't sweat it.

NS: It's an highly resistant organism. One that could withstand extreme temperatures and pressures.
NS: So it would've been just been plain ignorant to assume the ocean would kill it just like that.
CI: So.. It's alive..?
NS: Doubt it.
NS: I'd also be hard-pressed to call it a living being in the first place.
CI: ...You're really throwing me for a loop here, you know that?
EUS: Signal's just teasing you. Let me explain.
EUS: Although it was extremely resistant to most forms of trauma, it did react negatively to a more caustic environment.
EUS: One that happened to be quite similar to our oceans.
EUS: A stroke of luck I'd say.
CI: And you guys estimate it's probably dead by now?
NS: Probably.
NS: Even if it's not, the water currents surrounding our structures all head back out into the open waters.
NS: So even worse-case scenario, no one is endangered.
NS: And even then, we continually check just to make sure.
CI: And if it did come back?
EUS: If that happens...
EUS: Well, I'd rather not think about that.

EUS: Oh, that.
EUS: Well, with everything that happened recently.. I kinda forgot about it.
SW: Are you gonna finish it? Was looking forward to it.
CI: Trying to use Ember to cure your boredom?
SW: What can I say? He got some pretty fun ideas.
SW: I would try to make my own game.. But that's how I found out I have zero creativity.
EUS: Sure, I don't see why not.
EUS: Though I couldn't tell how long it'll take. Don't even have a prototype yet.
EUS: Right now it's basically just a concept with some ground work laid out.
SW: That's fine. Not like time is an issue for us anyways.
EUS: So what have you all been up to?
SW: Not much, just bored.
CI: Yea we kinda figured that one out.
CI: But honestly I'm the same. Just been jumping between the chat rooms.
DT: I got ahold of Horizon finally, but aside from that not much else.
EUS: Oh? How is she?
DT: She's fine, we've actually been talking quite a bit.
CI: Found an unexpected friend?
DT: You could say that.
DT: She's pretty straightforward and honest a person. Reminds me of Signal a bit.
EUS: Yea I got that vibe from her too.

CI: Same here.
RI: I don't think I even lost that much... Slight damage though.
CI: Spoiled, as usual.
RI: Jealous, as usual.
NS: I got hit a bit worse than expected... A large section of my side-paneling got ripped off.
RI: Oh, yikes.
DT: Is that gonna be okay?
NS: For now yea. Can't say for the distant future though.
NS: But it's not like we can do anything about it either, so it is what it is.
CI: Still, that kinda sucks.
NS: Yea... Oh well. Is Wind do▒ng alright?
CI: Wind? Haven't gotten ahold of her yet, but I imagine she's probably fine.
RI: Yea, chatted with her not too long ago, she's good.
RI: And Ember?
NS: Still dealing with the aftermath of the storm.
RI: Still? Shouldn't he be good by now?
RI: I mean, Twilight's doing fine, and they're basically at the same spot geographically right?
DT: While that's true, it's not so simple for Ember.
DT: Remember, his comms. array is a unique prototype.
DT: Separate from his main structure, situated far out in the ocean. Almost like an island of its own.
RI: Ah, right. Forgot about that.
RI: And that's purely why he's having issues still?
DT: Well, that.. And he's old.
CI: Old man Ember!
CI: But yea, no clue why he was designed like that. It just seems so.. unideal.
CI: No offence to Ember, of course.
NS: Apparently the idea was to make a centralized communications cable across the ocean, for a stable constant connection between multiple groups.
NS: You can see how well that went.
RI: But why? What's wrong with transmitters?
NS: Don't ask me.
CI: Well regardless, it seems that local group S-1 made it safe and sound.
CI: For the most part anyways.
CI: Maybe Ember's dead, but he's probably fine~

You can't see the ceiling, but notice there is a subtle purple glow emanating from far above. Ahead of you, there are three distinct paths; To the left, a small ordinary-looking door. To the right, a broken wall, leading into a dark tunnel. And a central massive archway with stairs that lead downwards.
FL: Hm, I vote going right.
TSF: The tunnel? I'm kinda curious about the small unassuming door to be honest.
FL: But I'm getting good vibes from the tunnel!
TSF: "Good vibes" he says. Famous last words.
TSF: But screw it, I vote right as well.
SBI: You both enter the tunnel cautiously. The darkness envelopes you as you proceed onward, clinging to you as though it were adhesive. Unable to see, you proceed onwards by pressing against the walls. You hear nothing, except the echoes of your footsteps as they crunch in the fresh soil.
SBI: A good amount of time passes, to the point where you think the tunnel just might not end... Then suddenly, the ground gives away from below. With no time to react, you fall helplessly. Just as you finally accept your fate to become a stain upon some forgotten ground, you reach the bottom.
SBI: SPLASH! Freezing cold water envelopes you. A harsh current immediately takes ahold, snatching you away. You hold your breath for as long as you can... But eventually your lungs give out, and your consciousness fades.
SBI: And.. To be continued!
TSF: FAMOUS. LAST. WORDS.

Thanks for holding out fellas ❤️

In the 1st broadcast it should be "antennas", not "antenna's", "and their they're basically", "like it's its own", 3rd broadcast seems to be formatted completely differently, lacking capitalization after "trouble?", "considering it's its location", also sometimes you use two and sometimes three dots
Nice to be back tho, ey?

I think I got them all?
Perhaps I didn't give it the best proof-read ever, oh well
Yea! Hopefully I stick around this time
Now 1st and 3rd are formatted differently from the 2nd and 4th
wait what
alright hold on
HOLD
oh, I see what you're talking about
I always liked using two when it didn't necessarily finish a sentence, but maybe that looks kinda inconsistent
but that's what I've been doing, so imma just revert
Wait you talking about the dots or the different broadcasts
I don't mean dots tho
Well the 1st and 3rd broadcasts are
like this
And the 2nd and 4th broadcasts are
like this
Or this is discord being fucky? Which i doubt but might be a thing
Okay so the formatting seems right but it's showing differently?
apparently?
well either way i gotta fix my dots now lol

Now the formatting switched AGAIN, discord, sort yourself out
