the idea is to have as few blowout matches in round 1 as possible. the easiest way to do that is to try to balance the first round by character popularity/game relevance so you encourage close matchups and thus you avoid people feeling like they just got the worst matchup possible for their less popular pick of choice (for example i would argue that spearmaster v. riv is balanced and hunter v. red lizard is basically an impossible matchup for red lizard to win)
