I mean I think the spitters always run when they see the red, usually directly into the shelter. Taming the red lizard helps with keeping them where you want them and saving you from the red centi (you can feed them the many baby centis you will kill)

Yeah I noticed when tamed, the red lizard just likes following you, whilst the spitter flees. Eventually, it’ll come out of the shelter again (you can spend that time herding the red centi)
