upon entering some rooms in the drought mod, the screen becomes like this. slugcat disappears and I can't do anything, have to quit the game to restart.

Close the game and upload the exceptionLog.txt file that you can find on your root installation folder (next to the .exe, default Steam path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rain World).
To send the file, drag and drop it into the Discord window. Do not copy and paste the contents of the file.

ah, looks like you didn't fully install Drought
it should've come with a folder called 'Rain World' which needs to be merged with the vanilla Rain World folder
although actually that's normally how the regions are installed as well, which if you were able to successfully start the game then you must've merged it somehow?
when you did the merging, it should've said something like 'there are a bunch of files that already exist, do you want to replace them?' and you should select the 'replace' option here. My best guess is that you did not?

When I installed drought I just inserted the Assets and World folders, not the Rain World folder itself, then selected the replace option.

I'd recommend doing it again just to make sure everything's in the right place

in Rain World\Assets\Futile\Resources\Atlases there is a file called rainWorld.txt and an associated png
This file is in vanilla and it's a collection of various sprites. Drought adds a few sprites to this, and the specific error here is complaining that it can't find one of the added sprites named 'MoonMark'

oh yeah, seems worth mentioning that I always spawn underwater too for some reason, which causes me to die
