First off you're talking about it like every single player knows exactly what's cheated and what's not. There are lots of people who wouldn't like to do it, but end up doing it due to their ignorance of the game. And if you think unknowingly obtaining a very blatantly cheated item that breaks any and all balance, by just playing the game as intended is not a problem, you're smoking something.

Secondly although co-op gameplay can be managed by the player and they can opt out of playing with cheaters, the fact that you don't even know if someone is cheating is ridiculous. DL is the easiest game ever to cheat in, in all of its environments. BTZ on the other hand is where it is intrusive, completely unlike what you described so far.
BTZ has to be the single most cheated-in gamemode I have ever played and in 2019-2020 I kept track of every confirmed cheater I ended up invading and it turned out at least 1 in 10 lobbies you connect to will have a cheater who is going to blatantly use something illegitimate against you. Although active cheats are only available on PC, it doesn't end there. Modded items have been transferred to consoles on saves and then distributed to the far reaches of the community, and with the ease of duplication and redistribution, they've polluted the whole game to match what's happening on PC. Now on consoles you'll also run into people using cheated items against you in btz, and all the other problems that come with their presence. You don't even need my word for this, ask any sane person in this community and it'll be an obvious fact to them that the game is completely ridden with cheated shit and everyone both very familiar with the game and morally right hates that fact.

It's also nonsense to say you deserve modded items created by the community using cheats because you purchased the game, because all the product includes is already given to you.

And lastly, it doesn't matter that you'd only do one harmless thing with a method, if the same method can be used for intrusively ruining someone's experience in a way that developers never intended and tried to stop.

And if you don't see the people defending what we're doing not because of enforcement, but because they also think it's right... go on, keep living in your bubble. It's all the same to us anyway as long as you co-operate.
