Well, looks like you just experienced the common glitch.

The only way to fix your save file is to join a friend who is in the Countryside.

No. If you create a new save file, you will be completely starting over in that save file.
Don't even bother trying to reset to an earlier mission in your current save file—it'll just reset you to the first main-campaign quest, iirc, no matter what you choose.
