You don't need it up all the time. Once you've linked Steam to it, and added the person on Epic Launcher, you just hit F in the game paused menu to login to Epic, and it adds your Epic friends to the list.

There is human co-op and there should be zombie invasions.

No, usually when you first log in, it will come up with a choice to enable invasions or disable invasions. Also, when night falls, a text box will appear on the right saying to hold T to enable invasions. At least for PC, not sure what the button is for console.

It still pops up.

Just go into online options in the pause menu and scroll down to where it says zombie invasions. You can set it to just night time or anytime.

Then play as normal. A Night Hunter will eventually invade you.
