There is minimum hunter distance in the pounce anim that the game teleports you to if you are closer than it.
You're always put like 4m away so the game can play the animation where the pounce can be evaded and it also is slower the closer you are so the time the human has to flash you is always close to the same amount with these compensations.

So the same way if you pounce from far away your tendrils will pull you closer to the human at a faster speed to make the evade window closer to the average length

There are differences significant enough to make you consider where you should pounce from, but to make close range not op and long range not completely useless those things are in place

There is also inevitable lag which makes btz behave in weird manners on a whole nother level so you should forget about questioning slightly weird stuff

Toss in a claw or a well placed ground pound every now and again

Force the human into odd situations with a spit

Or force them into a situation where they might have to tank a spit

If they manage to avoid it, see and figure out if they're open to a pounce if you're at full energy

Playing hunter takes practice, decent humans to test against, and a lot of nuanced timed and thought out plays

If you just toss yourself at a human or humans, you're bound to do nothing and give the humans an easy win
