It's not that it tried to innovate that it failed. It's that Miyazaki and the main team wasn't working on it and the people who were just made it difficult for no good justifiable reason other than "it's dark souls"
Every other game in the series has a specific reason to be hard, and so does dark souls 2. But I think dark souls 2 is the only one where the difficulty is implemented in a weird way
