There's still some good data to take from these things, much like Josh Strife Hayes do, I like taking notes on design mechanics. Upgrade system, if I remove the casino like BS, is a mechanic very much opposite to western design that is loot based. So, with a bit of tinkering, this and that, I can put up a design that uses this core, while using other mechanics to ensure it rewards skill, challenge, and beating content. It was very interesting for me to elaborate on that

the result would be a hybrid craft-focused challenge oriented MMO

to my knowledge, never done before

I had a few ideas to add world mechanics to give a utility to all that crafting too

To this day, WoW, with all its flaws, still is kicking

your gear become better but your reaction to fight mechanics also become better

it creates satisfaction to overcome an obstacle

and for most players except the ultra hardcore, there's always a next level of challenge once they did

I am in the middle of it now on PS4.
I will say at first I was not impressed because it feels like "yet another open world 3rd person story adventure game", but I stuck it out for a couple of hours of play and I admit it has grown on me. Characters and story are decent, even if none of it is breaking new ground. There are a couple things in the mechanics of the game that I think are cool and innovative though. Devs definitely made this game with care.
Also, it is a long game. I do all the quests and exploring everthing (just like in DL) so you will get plenty of hours out of it.
One of the cooler features that gives replayability are the challenges. They are mini games separate from the main game that reward you with stuff to use in the main game.
