As a reference, in the only genre that can achieve it without burning the budget of a small country, Detroit Become human is a good example of how a story can turn in a very sharp direction, but it works because it's a visual novel at heart. The same turn in a RPG means a good chunk of content a player doesn't see

In CP77's defense, standard NPCs AI is like a magic trick. If you don't look behind the curtain it's fine, if you want to ruin the trick, you obviously can. During most of my playthrough I didn't look behind the curtain and it felt pretty right
