I reckon a lot of it also has to do with the creative freedom Valve offer their employees with the whole desks on wheels concept. When it works, it'll most definitely produce some great results, but there is a lot that takes a backseat since creative energy is rather erratic making it hard to contain, control, and plan things with when that's the backbone of a project.
