It may be wise to save your excitement for Half-Life 2. Depending on who you are, Half-Life 1 may not strike a chord with you, at least not right off the bat. After all, it is a 22 year old game. Half-Life 2 on the other hand still holds up perfectly well today.

Half-Life 1 lays the groundwork for the franchise, it's good to play it first to be familiar with the setting and events that lead up to Half-Life 2, you will also understand more of the lore as well as certain references not just flying over your head. Still, I think it's perfectly fine to choose whether you want to play Half-Life 1 or not as the story of Half-Life 2 goes above and beyond what Half-Life 1 established. What happens in Half-Life 1 isn't important enough to negatively affect the story of Half-Life 2 if you decide to skip it.
However, I can't say the same thing about Portal.
Which by the way, Situs, Portal is set in the same universe as Half-Life.

My preferred way of playing The Clockwork Mansion is to escape through the ceiling without pulling any levers and just sneak around behind the machinery and contraptions like a silent mouse. Portal style for a lack of better words.
