Why is there this narrative that somehow Fortnite is only popular because of its collabs?

It was the biggest, most played video game for over 2 years before the first Collab even happened.

The truth is that a game like Fortnite will always have a lot of players no matter what because not only is it a good game with a very caring company behind it but it's just got charm that no other game really has.

Collabs are just a supplement, both to the game being fun and it's charm. Despite all the collabs, there's been nothing added to Fortnite that clashes with its quirkiness and if more people start coming in from other communities to buy the dragon ball skins or whatever then that's great! They get to play as characters they like and play a fun video game. Why does that frustrate you on account of principle? Players have fun, epic makes a shitload of money. Win-win right?

If you're argument is that Fortnite is just copying other properties and not innovating or doing anything good with it then WHY would the game be as popular as it currently is?

That's because epic actually innovates and creates new things. The Lego mode is a blend of survival elements from Zelda and Minecraft mixed with Lego characters and creations all within a Fortnite world that you can play with your friends in Fortnite.

It's a new experience entirely and it's one that millions of people have been logging in daily to try out and play since it launched just a few days ago.

And that's still just a single mode in the game, I mean just a week ago or so they shattered records on their live event day because so many people were trying to play it that not only did it crash Fortnite servers but it crashed playstation network and Xbox live servers aswell.

And that's only destroying their own player count record which was set by them just 2 months prior at the start of the last season when they had 40+ million players on in a single day.

If Fortnite was truly just a ripoff game that couldn't hold it's own without it's collabs then why would so many people be consistently playing it over said other games that Fortnite is just taking ideas from?

This discussion only started because I said Fortnite has charm, Its that charm that is the core to it's identity. Collabs only supplement the charm and make the game more fun

In that last message, I stated their last record being the 40+ million players in a single day. That was for the launch of last season which was the "OG" season.

It was the season that returned the game to an old map and loot pool than 2018. The season was marketed as an original Fortnite experience. There were no collabs that season besides some invincible skins for the launch of that shows second season. Other than that there were no collabs in the battle pass or Collab items in-game, just a mostly classic original Fortnite experience

And yet they peaked their player count that season, millions of people played throughout the entire season leading to the massive crash of Fortnite and platform servers during the live event a bit ago.

What I'm saying is that Fortnite is an experience that's made itself desirable because it is a fun experience. Where other games might use a Lego Collab as just a novelty Fortnite went and made a brand new game with it. They just put in the time to build the best experience for their players and with or without collabs the game would be just fine.

I mean I think Riz just said he doesn't spend money on it and yet, admitted it's the best ongoing multiplayer game. So that's anecdotal proof that there's plenty of people who play Fortnite because it's fun and not just for collabs. (Most collabs are just cosmetics anyway)

It's a glitch that prevents me from getting 100%, basically what happened is at the beginning of the game when you get the access to type I'm codes to unlock certain characters, that messes up with your game on Endgame. I was unable to talk to characters that I needed to in order to complete the 3 other side-quests.

In other words: a bug killed my chance of getting a 100% completion mark.
