But they found out if you try to mess with nature like that, it'll react in unexpected ways. They weren't successful, and as a consequence they accidentally created an anomalous zone around Chernobyl that fucks with reality inside of it big time. All of it is deserted and populated by "stalkers" (Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers and Robbers.)

I guess what's so horribly wrong about the zone is up to you to find out since you're planning on playing.
