The three original games are Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat. They're pretty old and janky but if you don't mind that for the sake of story go ahead.
Anomaly is a community made standalone game that combines all maps and most of the content together, changes gameplay slightly and has addon support and tons of customization. It's free and the developers approved of it. You can download it on moddb or something Idk google it if you're interested.
In terms of atmosphere and quality of life the best experience is also with some addons on top of that.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in general is about an anomalous zone in Ukraine that appeared as a result of an experiment where they tried to tap into Earth's noosphere and make adjustments to reality.
In the game's universe the Chernobyl disaster wasn't about a reactor meltdown but rather the backlash from attempting something so bold as changing human nature to make the world a better place. There's a whole iceberg of other events and notable aspects of The Zone.

In the "present" it's exclusively inhabited by Stalkers (acronym for scavengers, trespassers, adventurers, loners, killers, explorers and robbers) and local life produced by the zone like mutants and other denizens. Survival is a struggle so everyone who enters probably has to be unhinged to some degree. Everyone has their reason whether it's riches, curiosity, adventure, a new life, or changing the world by reaching the Wish Granter...
