the fun part is always the combat drills because that's the real action, duh. We either imagine we're shooting at something or we have actual reactive targets. The instructors narrate the situation and you act accordingly, take cover from indirect fire and stuff.

On longer war exercises when you're not just doing some rushes the "simulation" goes on for 3-7 days. Sometimes they make another company act as the enemy and they actually launch attacks while shooting blanks and sometimes nothing happens and we just pretend. The part that gets on your nerves is the fact that you constantly have to pretend. One of the things that make life difficult is light discipline meaning you don't use any flashlights to avoid being spotted. I've had to assemble tents and other shit while it was so dark you couldn't tell who was in front of you. All the while you're freezing and waiting to get the heater running in the tent. Everyone stops giving a fuck eventually and only larps properly when staff are watching of course. And yeah every time you move around you never cross open areas or walk along roads because a simple reconnaissance drone can catch you and the next day the weather at your position would be rain of artillery with a chance of bombing run.
The whole idea of all the exercises is just larping to imagine it's a real war. @leaden orchid
