@devout berry The game is entirely server-based and there are official and community hosted servers. The map is always a huge island and it can either be custom built or procedurally generated. Procedural generation can be tweaked to include things to the owner's liking.

There is no universal player stash or any save files because there is no character progression. Making "progress" means you obtain items that stay on that server on your character and if you die you will become a corpse and your stuff stays in it.

You have pretty much complete building freedom but it costs materials which you have to fell trees and break rocks for.

Conventionally, servers get wiped monthly, which means complete reset. This is a good thing because part of the fun is the race to find the good stuff before other groups or players do. Community server owners can wipe at their preferred intervals whether it be few months or few weeks.

Basically your experience depends entirely on what type of server you play on, they can be modded to various degrees. There are two kinds of vanilla experiences you can get though; heavily populated servers and dead servers. Heavily populated means you will probably have to constantly fight other people to survive but they always have a choice to be friendly. Dead server experience is pretty much just no threat unless you go to specific locations to fight NPCs, which you usually get the best loot from and they're not that easy. There are roaming animals that can attack you though.
