the general rule for me to determine whether a game is actually fair to play or not is simple, are the base stats of whatever it is you play with the same with you and your opponent or not, and if they're not do they make the game easier or do they force you to use a certain playstyle that suits you

its why i always use the CS games as an example and specifically csgo, they're the perfect mix of how to make a balanced game that's about skill

but like other than that any modern game i can think of either gatekeeps the loadouts that you can actually use to compete in high level lobbies with the sweaty tryhards to make you have to get shit on by them until you get to their level eventually (thus forcing this cycle of players feeling like they're good when they're not, its just that their weapons are better than who they're playing against), or they make it so that there's a meta that if you don't follow you'll be at a severe disadvantage and have to compensate by being much better than who you're playing against to still win with (this just makes it flat out everyone being clones of each other)
