I elaborated to cock in vc, but boss aggro is designed around summons, meaning there's very little breathing room to attack, even worse for unga bunga builds. This is far harder than other Fromsoft games in this regard. A lot of people don't want to use summons, or they don't find it fun, so I can understand why this is a criticism. Especially since some people are elitists and call others out for using summons the whole game.

The game is also balanced around the fact that you will be wearing armor or will have a weapon but people ultimately choose to play how they want regardless of balancing

Anyway, spirit ashes aren't as much of a criticism I have of the game as the online play in ER. Coop is shit, kicking partners out after completing a boss. No seemless coop of running around like I would be doing in DS3, and not being able to use torrent makes open world travel abysmal. I actively avoided summoning my brother because of this, whereas in DS3 I pretty much played the entire game coop with him minus some bosses.

There are no covenants or equivalent for Elden Ring PvP. Would be cool to get more different kinds of rewards like that. And again, no torrent makes it pretty sleeper to play.

Yeah but elden ring isnt DS3. The spirits are brand new to the series. If you don't enjoy them that's fine that's why it's great that you aren't forced to use them. The way I see it, they are a net positive.
Gives casual players less of a grind, gives bad players a nice crutch, and gives veterans a harder time and more bragging rights (which we all know they love) for not using them

Yes, ER spirits are a part of the game mechanics and choosing to ignore or not use them is on the player. My problem is that they exist in the first place, which pretty much creates this scenario we just talked about. If they did not exist, boss AI and aggression wouldn't be anywhere near as tough, like previous Fromsoft titles.

A solution I would suggest in an ideal world is to make the AI behave as if Spirits weren't a thing, however scale bosses when a Spirit is used like as if a summon is used. Perhaps not on the same scale, but in a similar way.

For me, I don't mind using summons through ER because it makes the game playable for me, but I wouldn't be able to beat many of the bosses without it.

To your ideal world I just disagree. Imo the core intent of spirit summons is to provide another crutch and give the player more options. I personally would like a difficulty scaling for spirit summons but I just don't see that working. With how many there are and how inconsistent they all are there would be no "one size fits all" scaling for spirit summons.

I wouldn't mind if this is how they designed it. I think it would be nice to be able to play any boss with no pressure to use spirit summons, but with the current design they seem to just be another failsafe for the player. I don't mind either of these designs, they are equal to me. Just different, I don't necessarily see how the way the game does it now is a flaw

i imagine it sounds good on paper for devs, "Ok guys we'll have a fire enemy right then a cryo one, then a poison one, then a lightning one then 200 others that are a combination of these elements right, and so if the player doesn't spend 4 hours fighting the basic human npcs to get enough skill points to gather damage resistance for every one of these enemies he'll get shit on, oh and in order to even do damage you need to get a weapon and infuse it with elemental energy, oh and you need to keep it above a certain level, and every infusion grants you +2%"

the most annoying form of rpg game trash is boosts that make no sense at all, like why the fuck are you putting % increases as skills ? or as items that i have to grind to get, i swear 70% of the items in most rpg games are garbage, you get them then sell them later on for the game's currency and you feel like the fight to get them wasn't worth it at all
