In GTA the update and all the content in it is completely free, it's just very predatory Because they price the items so high to try to get you to buy shark cards, even though it's a paid game.

In destiny's case it was a paid game for people like me, and then you have to buy the expansion, and then you still have to pay microtransactions if you want the cosmetics. Money wall behind money wall, behind money wall.

In GTA you can atleast spend time grinding the game out and buy all the new content you want after putting in the hours....

In destiny you PAY to grind. You buy the new expansion, go through it once and then grind to the new level cap for the next paid expansion

The thing is, GTA hasn't actually added anything comparable to the scope of Destiny's expansions, i'm counting the diamond heist, cayo perico as well as the Dr Dre chapter, cayo perico imo was the most innovative / fresh thing they've added and it was still underwhelming, the island is boring and feels small considering 80% of it is just ubisoft styled terrain as well as you're supposed to just walk in do the heist and get out, every content update they release is a piece of generic shit, the same map just using buildings that you couldn't get into before and it just always feels like you're always still playing GTA 5 from 2013, and the fact that 80% of their updates are just adding new overpriced cars that handle the exact same because the engine is still the same / remixing the jobs playlist is in no way a justification because it's "free", the new map they've shown that's coming for the lightfall expansion solos everything rockstar have released for gtao since release, you just can't compare them because one's an absolute waste of time and the other's an expansion that originally was supposed to be treated like it when the game was P2P, why weren't people complaining about this when the taken king came out for the first game ? cuz i remember people were praising the shit out of it, and it was also 40$

I'm gonna try my best to reply to this text wall.

1.) I'm not defending GTA updates in really and capacity, also not defending the quality of their updates. My point is that the game is p2p and it's not asking any more money of you upfront to enjoy new content, content quality aside. My overall point really has nothing to do with GTA, it was just a good example to contrast with destiny because it's basically the opposite.

2.) Destiny's expansions aren't really that innovative when you boil them down. You get a new area to explore and do missions in and you get some new side story. Not really in the front running of innovative video game expansions. You mention GTA's mechanics have been the same since 2013. Okay, and Destiny's haven't? It's a pretty simple FPS with a admittedly innovative level of team play for a mainly pve game but what else can the game offer after 30 hours or so of playing F2P...

3.) I think the first game had a bad model too, likely a bit worse than it's sequel because it was p2p the whole time. But then again that can go either way really considering that D2 has a silly microtransaction store and removes it's own content from the game.

Also in terms of the first game you have to remember that that was like a decade ago. The gaming landscape has changed quite a bit since then, especially when it comes to live service titles.

What was once a very innovative always online non-mmo live service fps is now just the standard in the modern video game scope. Nowadays destiny really isn't doing much to set itself apart anymore, not that they have too but I still get the right to criticize it.

You wait a year to pay $40 for a new 10 hour long campaign (even if that) and then a grind fest for the new gear and light level cap... All the while still having to pay for cosmetic items AND having to deal with content being removed from the game.

Meanwhile a game like Fortnite... Live service battle royale that despite being In a sea of games of the same genre, heavily sets itself apart. Had had over 5 years of consistent weekly-biweekly updates, new ingame event and season every few months, huge innovations such as "creative" mode. All for free.

", are they supposed to include a launcher to a brand new game with each expansion ? you just listed what they're literally supposed to include, an expansion is supposed to be just that, it gives you a new map to play in that isn't ridiculously small / boring cough cayo perico cough and expand the storyline to keep it interesting, which is something the F2P games we're comparing here fail miserably at doing through their free updates, the problem and your job as a dev is to prevent that feeling of well that was underwhelming and i've got nothing else to play now (something that i've experienced every single time with GTAO's content from when i finished the first 5 heists all the way to Dr Dre), the game is supposed to never end, the amount of content has to be wide and varied enough that the player themselves can't help but take a break and at the same time still want to come back and explore the rest of it, i want to use every weapon available in destiny because i know they're gonna be unique but i don't give a shit about 90% of the weapons in GTA because i already know what they're gonna be like, apart from the mk2 sniper rifle with the explosive rounds, same thing with the cars, it's always a matter of quantity vs quality, i know 80% of the cars are recycled NPC cars and apart from the scramjet, armored kuruma, mk2 opp, the special mission vehicles i just don't care, it's garbage that will eventually get boring and the only thing pumping out this kind of recycled trash as "content" updates does is hurt the overall experience because eventually when you do see past the wall of quantity you realize the quality is severely lacking, i'd rather have them take their time and release something that i won't get bored of after 2 days even if it's paid than have a free waste of time that gets me even more bored

It's a pretty simple FPS with a admittedly innovative level of team play for a mainly pve game but what else can the game offer after 30 hours or so of playing F2P...", the amount of weapons / gear / abilities in destiny negates this, not to mention the fact that destiny 1 was already ahead of its time when it comes to the Sci-Fi FPS genre while GTA 5 was dead on arrival because of it's clunky animations and 2008 era movement / collision system, by the time you get to level 120 in GTA 5 there's nothing left for you to see because when you strip down the game to it's core you notice how it's pretty shallow in this regard, there's no incentive for you to explore, there's like 30 sedans but i've never drove any of them because the game gives you no reason and it has a poor way of pushing the overlooked assets, they had a nice try with the casino jackpot cars but never put in enough effort into it, to give an analogy, i'm interested in doing a quest that's gonna give me a new weapon that i couldn't get some other way, i'm not interested in spinning a wheel to get an NPC car i could walk out of the casino and just steal, that's what's offered after 30 hours
