If you want to avoid Virals try to stay off the streets and avoid making loud noises

If virals spot you try to either run out of their range or climb on the roof of a building and push them off

You can also go to the big bridge called Infamy Bridge. Climb the towers and scaffolding, zipline to the other side and there is a military outpost with a lot of medkits and gauze. It also respawns.
