Do I really need to write yet another custom plugin for that or did I search wrong? I'd prefer to avoid touching this mess.

Idk how it's setup and whether it's worth it or not, but I used to have nginx in front with 2 config files that weren't loaded (didn't end in .conf) and then with symlink I chose which one to load. Let me switch to custom maintenance page with 2 commands - update symlink and reload nginx config.
Idk how often updates are done here and whether it's worth it to do it.
