I'm not sure where to ask this question so i'm just gonna fire in here, its more of a general server hosting question (for any game not just minecraft, although i'd use it for minecraft.)
Is it possible/a good idea to turn an old computer into a server instead of paying a server hosting site to host one for you? And if so, how easy would this be. I've got a bunch of old desktops laying around doing jack all and I've considered using them as servers instead of dropping ~35$ every three months.

i am probably the least qualified to answer this but my first impression would be that you might be limited by ram, or it depends too on the amount of people you intend to have on the server. also by how fast your internet connection is? i want to learn how to do this too so i can eventually stop paying for hosting but the best i can get in internet is cable that's quite slow so that would be a barrier.
