I have been maintaining, supporting and providing updates of someone else's plugin for several months; (it's open source and NOT premium) I just did a major refactoring
of the plugin to add in backwards compatibility for older MC versions. I've also been the only one answering support questions
for the developers most recent version, on their Discord (the dev hasn't responded for months to anyone).
I could not find anything on the Spigot forums about taking over a resource or offering a variation of an existing one.

It probably means that you read from and write to a field which is declared as volatile within one method/function. For example i++. This can lead to race conditions.
The compiler warns you bacause you might think there is not race condition because of volatile.
bytesWritten should probably be an AtomicInteger or you use synchronisation ..
volatile basically just guarantees that all other threads see your changes if these changes happened before (and makes read/writes to long and double also atomic) but it wont protect you from (all) race conditions.
