Sophomore Year

Just want to call out how much I love the modern pop cover of Billy Joel's Pressure at the start. The show sure loves it's Billy Joel.

We're so back, fam. Emma continues being the best but like, tell the girls to stop harassing the barista? Hope we see more of Zach McGowan (Dogknott).
On the other hand I thought Cate might actually be dead and then the "next on this season" segment shows her coming right back.

Yeah, the moment the "this season on" started I skipped, because I'm learning just how deep into the season those previews can get, and like, I'm already planning to watch, no need to sell me.

Well, Cipher is right proper terrifying.

clever fox
#

Yeesh. Like a meat puppet.

clever fox

Feels super appropriate for him to not just be a helpless human in a super school though. He did that in Legion, and David Haller basically tore through him any time he wanted without issue, so letting him be the telepath is neat.

So the guy in the tank is Godolkin, right? But is he Cipher's actual father? I'm thinking Cipher is himself a meat puppet being controlled by Godolkin remotely, either some kinda "corporeal astral projection" or he simply kindapped a guy, which is why there's no V in his blood.

I was actually wondering something similar, or if perhaps we were looking at some kind of Dorian Grey thing where the other body ages and takes damage for him.

Is this whole season out?

Okay.

well, weekly drops but with the first three episodes dropped on day 1

north lion
#

Yes, and as a result after only two weeks we're already on episode 4.

It's Amazon's default model, I think. Enough of a binge to get you interested, then drip the rest. At least it isn't the model they piloted with Invincible where they split the season.

north lion
#

Unfortunately it kinda locks the writers for all their shows into making sure the third episode has some kind of hook to make sure you come back for episode 4.

clever fox
#

Hey, saves them from having to do that on the Pilot episode

north lion
#

Well shit, if it isn't Beka Valentine from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.

Sam's mom? Crap, it totally is her.
Did not expect Sister Sage, but if she's got qualms about Einstein being racist why is she hooking up with a dude that has a Nazi closet in his own university?
If Marie can do resurrections I'm gonna assume she can control more than just blood cells, and also that she's knocked out because otherwise I don't know how whatever guards they're sending hope to stop her. How long were Marie and Annabeth apart? I always find it funny when people recognize the adult version of someone they last saw as a kid, granted Marie could've guessed from "context clues" and her sister probably knows her from TV.

so Cipher who was always 10 steps ahead didn't have a contingency plan for the fake escape he set up? Sam breaking through the wall helped for sure but they didn't seem to be in much trouble if that didn't happen.
Did not expect Neumann's daughter (who I totally didn't recognize until she used her mouth-leeches or whatever we're calling it) or Edgar. I think if Marie mentioned Cipher has no V in his blood and that he can puppet people, he would've put two and two together.
I thought Cipher's other power is some kinda hyper-awareness but maybe he can just briefly jump into a person's head and like browse through short term-memory.

north lion
#

Alright, I might be remarkably dense... is Cipher actually Thomas Godolkin projecting himself into his son's body but he can also chain that ability down line?

clever fox
#

It's gotta be. It's the only reasonable explanation that the show hasn't given us already.

#

Also, with all the talk of Homelander this episode I realized: we're not gonna get a season 3 here. Everything has to wrap in the next, what, 2 episodes? Because the whole world wraps with the next season of the Boys, and there's not gonna be anything left to fight after.

Lol, I've seen two articles bubble up on Reddit about how the show runners we're sure if people were going to see the twist coming, and we're kinda surprised so many did. Particularly odd because I'm not really in The Boys subreddit's orbit.

north lion
#

Same. The twist was kinda obvious, I figured it was too obvious.

#

It was amazing to watch Marie repeatedly chase after the idiotball.

scenic hawk

Called it, I guess. Godolkin gotta be over the Moon because for all the planning him being Cipher's "prisoner" in need of a rescue is something the kids thought up pretty much on their own. Or at least that's what it looks like, I'm kinda confused how this all came together - at the start of the episode we saw Godolkin had to improvise but he later implies this was to some extent Sage's plan. I expected Cipher to die, maybe seemingly by his own hand, followed by "it was me all along" but with Marie having the power to heal anything I should have reassessed.

north lion
#

Poor Doug. Also, that felt awfully anti-climactic.

clever fox
#

I think it's worth being a pet peeve now whenever a "smartest person in the world" character has to ask someone why.

#

But, otherwise it was fine. It didn't really pay off well, but it wrapped up and now we have some new names to get killed off in The Boys Final Season. So that's nice. I genuinely expected all the talk of pressure and evolving your powers to apply to more than just Marie and the Villain, but whatever. Just makes it kinda forgettable, when it could have been hype.

scenic hawk
#

Wow, Cameo Central in here. Kinda disappointed they killed Godolkin when they basically introduced him last episode, then again I have no idea what else they were going to do when it's not clear there will be a Season 3. Clever title, I expected either Godolkin continuing the killing spree and making Butt Boy kill himself by way of a reverse Ouroboros or Godolkin getting trapped in the hole himself.

clever fox
#

I can't imagine a S3, seeing as The Boys ends next season, and it's kinda hard to justify more of this without that.

In retrospect, I feel like the setting up for Vought Rising should have been more expected, because clearly we're doing something very different from the comics with sage at the heart - but it worked nonetheless. The finale felt a lot like a whole event in itself, and I really liked the payoff for pretty much every character, and the season's events as a whole. Perfectly on theme.

This was very The Boys Season 4.5, as opposed to its own thing
