Not sure if they made them universal with the new nvidia cables but with 8 pin connectors you can get ones that have incorrect pin layout which would fry the GPU/PSU

Wire gauge is the thickness of your wires and the most common being 16 and 18. The lower the number the thicker the wire. Just make sure you read your psu product specifications and match that wire gauge with the cable extensions
