its gonna get messier too. new monitor on the way, getting an iphone xr specifically for vtubing and i have a new work dock and laptop and monitors i need to set up for remote work too to replace the previous remote set up i had since i changed jobs in june.

From my understanding the Apple cameras with their facial recognition is REALLY good for vtubing

due to how facetracking works apple has an advantage over the competition for a couple of reasons. one of the big advantages is machine learning. apple has been trained on a much larger and much more diverse set of training data than google and microsoft have making iphone's facetracking more accurate than webcam and android. the X is the earliest model able to do facetracking but it's held back by the X being underpowered, so the next best option is either to get a renewed iPhone XR or an iPhone 13. The XR is $200. The 13 is $550. The only thing the iPhone will be doing is facetracking, so the obvious purchase was a renewed XR.

The gap is closing. mediapipe is getting a lot better, but it's still going to be a while before iphone isn't the undisputed king.

the 12/XS/XR/Pro Max all perform identically. The next bump in tracking accuracy was the 13 but it's really just the 13 has slightly better tracking at the very edges of looking left/right. I don't consider that to be worth a $350 jump.

you can compensate with tuning your models parameters too so it's not a big deal.
