#Replace current loot sharing behavior with a need/greed system

The current loot sharing system is clunky because dropped weapons can only be picked up by specific players. For example, if a weapon drops from a chest near the start of the room and everyone is at the exit and waiting to move on, a specific person will end up having to run back to the start of the room to get the weapon that dropped for them. Additionally, the person who found the weapon in the first place has to use the chat to tell someone to come get their drop, and it's difficult to verbally communicate where the item is. Ideally, anyone should be able to pick up the weapon as soon as they see it drop, and it would be distributed to a random person afterwards.
I recommend changing the current loot sharing system to the need/greed system that some MMOs use. When a weapon drops, players pick from "need", "greed", or "skip". After all the players opt in or out, the item will be given to a random player who picked "need". If no one picked "need", then the item will be given to a random player who picked "greed". If everyone chose to skip the item, it will be left on the ground or destroyed. If you use this system, players wouldn't even need to interact with dropped items at all; the vote could just automatically begin when the item drops.
Switching to this system will improve the pace of the game in multiplayer since items can be picked up by any player (or players don't have to pick up items at all) while still allowing loot to be shared.

this relies on players reporting truthfully - a greedy player could pick "need" every time troll2

That doesn't actually matter. If everyone picked need all the time, the loot would effectively still be random. But in the case that someone DOES choose to pick greed or skip the item, it's even better than random, because people who picked need have a higher chance of getting the item.

But if you guys anticipate the playerbase being upset about everyone picking need all the time, you could reduce the voting options to just "take" and "skip".

Yes, and the person who picks up the drop is the one to get it, so it ends up being a race to see who's the first to pick up the drop, with people getting upset if one person takes all the loot. This suggestion is intended to make the loot sharing setting less of a hassle.
