I want to like HollowPoint but I just can't get used to playing it with a keyboard like I normally do, and in addition to my muscle memory messing with me the lag spikes when I fire the gun... just make it not feel good to play

The hard part is mainly making the thing, getting the sprites into the game has been made relatively easy

how can i unbind the debugmod keybinds?
in your saves folder there is a settings file with json key:value format for all the binds
this is ish how it looks on current patch version, and it should work to just delete the ones you dont want a bind for and just rebind them in-game if needed
if on an older debug version this format is used tho, so you have to remove the one in "keys" and the "value" in the the appropriate column. Like "Key" line 4 corresponds with value line 4, etc etc "binds": { "keys": [ "Toggle All UI", "Toggle Enemy Panel", "Toggle Vignette", "Zoom In", "Zoom Out", "Reset Camera Zoom", "Save DG Data", ....... ], "values": [ 282, 290, 277, 280, 281, 279, 49, ......... ] }

Hello everybody! Just looking at the read me for the randomizer mod and i come accross this:
With these skips allowed, the player is advised to take care to not lock out of certain required pogos. Obtain:
- No more than 1 nail upgrade before claw or wings
- No more than 3 nail upgrades before claw
what do nail upgrades have to do with skips?
i dont get itttt

they are heavily advised in the mod so you don't get locked out
and you want as many hits as possible on an enemy so that you can pogo into new areas

I have a idea for making a voice acting mod
There’s a method for bringing up the dialogue box that fsms use(can also call it in code)
Just make a hook for it and play audio corresponding to the key that will go into the GetLanguage stuff
Make it use a folder in the mods folder like CustomKnight, then have people put wav files in there that you can convert into audio clips with WavUtility then play a audio clip from the file with the name of the key in the hook

So it loads the png files into a texture, then makes a sprite from that texture, then in the boss, it sets the MainTexture of the material of the current sprite definition of the tk2dsprite component of lost kin to the texture of the sprite.

So, In my conversations with someone it turns out that GPLv3 may not be entirely a valid license for mods, though opinions of this may vary. (The argument here is that they're linking with Hollow Knight, which is not itself GPLv3). The simple fix for this would be to relicense said mods to be LGPL instead -- but that means getting the okay from (or removing the contributions from) everyone who has made contributions in the past. I'd also be interested in a strong counter argument, which is likely less work.
(I'm personally of the mind that Hollow Knight in this case falls more under the 'system libraries' bit and it's a non-issue, but I'm trying to come up with a strong argument to back that)
the mod coding written by others is allowed free and open usage by anyone else that wishes to use it though. there is nothing proprietary in nature about it and all code is open source
Yeah, I see that the code is open source. The issue I'm talking to (privately with someone else) is that the particular flavor of GPLv3 does not appear to be friendly to distribution of binaries of Hollow Knight mods because of this bit:
The "Corresponding Source" for a work in object code form means all the source code needed to generate, install, and (for an executable work) run the object code and to modify the work, including scripts to control those activities. However, it does not include the work's System Libraries, or general-purpose tools [...] For example, Corresponding Source includes interface definition files associated with source files for the work, and the source code for shared libraries and dynamically linked subprograms that the work is specifically designed to require
In short, unless you can find a way to count Hollow Knight as "a System Library" per the GPL's definition... since Hollow Knight mods by definition are specifically designed to require Hollow Knight, the issue is in distributing GPLv3'd binaries since the source for Hollow Knight itself is unavailable. The weird part here is this has no affect on distributing just the source code and requiring people to compile it on their own (because the "The Corresponding Source for a work in source code form is that
same work.")
There's two proper fixes: switch to LGPL or another FOSS license, or add an exception to the license for each mod to explicitly allow for linking. Either option requires permissions from all contributors to a particular GPL-licensed mod to change the license, of course.

Basically, the issue is the license is not possible to uphold -- the license requires us to distribute TC's source code, but we are not able to. Thus, technically distributing binaries of any Hollow Knight mods (unless you are the sole author or have permission from all authors, because you can do whatever you want as the copyright holder) is in violation of their license. If they're relicensed GPL or MIT or any number of other still-Free licenses this becomes a nonissue.
Of course then the question then is:
The "System Libraries" of an executable work include anything, other than the work as a whole, that (a) is included in the normal form of packaging a Major Component, but which is not part of that Major Component, and (b) serves only to enable use of the work with that Major Component, or to implement a Standard Interface for which an implementation is available to the public in source code form. A "Major Component", in this context, means a major essential component (kernel, window system, and so on) of the specific operating system (if any) on which the executable work runs, or a compiler used to produce the work, or an object code interpreter used to run it.
Can we argue that Hollow Knight is an operating system as far as mods for it are concerned? (Note: "operating system" is never formally defined in the license file). I think it's a bit of a stretch, but if we can the whole point is moot.

we received permission from the copyright holder. and all subsequent modding work falls under GPLv3, which is open to any who would want to use it

@sullen siren @steady elbow Delayed response but thanks for at least somewhat considering the issue. In this particular, I know someone who is interested in working on something related to Randomizer but is considering writing something from scratch because of the hypothetical license issue -- if it was cleared up (and LGPLing satisfies that) they'd feel a lot better about it. I can't talk about specifics though. I'm 99.9% sure nobody who actually has standing cares but there's a difference between having an unwritten agreement to just ignore a problem versus making a relatively simple change to just fix it.
I do know according to the Github contributors page there's three other people who'd need to sign off on such a change or have their contributions removed for it to be legitimate. I'm assuming that's a non-issue (assuming those three people are still reachable, and I know at least one of them is), but it is a concern.
@rapid burrow I don't think TC has any desire to sue regarding modding, nor do they have any standing to do so. The GPL issue I raised is that by my interpretation every binary distribution of a GPL'd mod is in violation with the mod's license. Only the mod author(s) have any standing here if they chose to do something about it, but it's still an (easily fixed) issue.
@weak plinth The aggregate case is for things like distributing a Linux install -- including something that's GPL as part of that distribution does not require the rest of the (unrelated) contents to be also be GPL. We aren't distributing Hollow Knight itself thus this doesn't apply. It might apply if, say, someone put together a modpack of unrelated mods that don't depend on each other and wanted to distribute it.

It could too easily be used as a "I don't like what you're doing so I'm going to selectively sue you for being in violation of the license" thing if someone was disgruntled about something. I'm certain this was not the intended outcome by the folks who came up with the GPL but it just happens to be a weird side effect. I'm not insinuating someone here WOULD do that, but somebody wanting to make sure they're covered in all cases might. Just think of it as a bug report -- laws and licenses and whatnot are basically programs for how society works anyways.

What's this about?
TL;DR: Randomizer (and other Hollow Knight mods) are currently GPL. If you're willing to read through a long discussion, TL;DR: it technically looks like distributing binaries of mods with the license is technically in violation of the license because it depends on HK itself which we obviously can't distribute source code for. Changing the license to LGPL will fix it, but that needs the okay of everyone who has contributed code. You have a commit in the project in question.
(MIT should fix it too, MPL might but I don't know the specifics of that license that well)

The original intent there is to prevent you from distributing your fork of a GPL project that's been modified to require your proprietary non-FOSS thing, I think. But it has unintended side effects for... mods to games

@celest wigeon It's a good question. https://github.com/unitystation/unitystation/issues/2057 also has a discussion on it that may or may not be applicable. And, the silly weird clause is: If you are the sole contributor/only person who holds the copyright for your entire mod, it's a moot point FOR YOU since you can distribute using any terms/license you want, but may be problematic for anyone down the chain distributing your work.
You also are allowed to, as the copyright holder, add an exemption to your license to specifically allow linking to Unity and other required tools or somesuch while still being otherwise GPL. Note that GPL allows derivative works to remove those exemptions but not add new ones.
My guess is: LGPL is the simplest fix that allows you to stay close to the spirit of GPL. MIT is extremely permissive -- there is nothing in MIT that prevents someone from making their own derivative work and selling it without source code as "The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software."

What do you mean animations changing? There's a set amount of states the knight's sprite can be in, no? So, if you make a 3d model, position it to each state, and replace the 2d sprite position with a 3d sprite position would it not essentially make it 3d?

So I closed it from task manager
trying to disable all the mods. It maybe helped.

@stiff wolf closing window is what shows when you click "exit game" and before I closed the game from task manager the game never let me exit normally when I pressed exit

Might be worth uninstalling and then manually deleting everything.
Move your save files to a different folder to keep them and just start completely from scratch. Uninstalling might not be getting rid of everything.
