Gun doesn't work / HUD is jank

• Hollow Point doesn't work on new saves. Save and quit, then reload the save file.

Starting Pale Court

• Install it using Lumafly
• You must have ||All dreamers||
• You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
• You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

• HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
• AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
• Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
  • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
  • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
• HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
  • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
• Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
• Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
• Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Thunderstore (the mod website) has a general API that anyone can use to create an installer for mods from it.

You got what sounds like the official Thunderstore (app) installer, which is fine, but we don't recommend it because it has ads and seems a little bulkier. R2ModMan is an almost identical installer that doesn't have the ads or extra bulkiness; Gale is an alternative installer that tries to be overall more efficient.

Outside of those, the Silksong Modding community has devs that are working on dedicated installers as well, so that there is an option to have a modding experience that has community features for Silksong itself (much like Lumafly for HK)

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

• "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
  • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
• Your game patch doesn't match your installer
  • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
  • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
  • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
• Something didn't install correctly
  • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
  • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
• You're on Linux/Steamdeck
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.
• Your game is cracked/pirated

Those are indeed the files to backup (well only the first one is required), and for playing with mods on them, well, that depends on the mod. Some mods can be played on already existing files, such as Pale Court for instance, but some mods require new saves (such as mods that have ItemChanger as a dependency)

I would like to mention a mod idea I had for silksong even if nothing comes of it
Hornet is still severely weakened from the citadels cage, making it so if she takes on a new crest it fuses with her and or makes her into a new being like in the weaver queen ending
In this mod you would get a new design for each crest + a new crest, which occurs around the time you bind eva (of course in the mod you should have the ability to bind Eva by the first meeting)
Once hornet has fused with the new crest, you cannot remove it at all as hornet is permanently bound to it
I would imagine that certain animations and attacks get changed between crests, like take the beast crest for example, when you sprint hornet would go on all fours.

I also had the idea that you could also get the weaver queen crest, but I ultimately scrapped the idea as I didn’t want to go too far with the mod idea, and I didn’t know how you would get it in game

What do save files looks like?

• Each Silksong save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:

they install them to separate 'profiles' and use a doorstop DLL override to point the modding tools at that specific profile

in cogfly, once you create a profile and have the little profile card thing on your Profiles screen, you can click on the card (anywhere except launch) to install mods to it, among various other actions

• "Hollow Knight isn't responding"

Common issues

• If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
• If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).

Hollow Knight and Bepinex

Mods installed from external sources from the installers (ie Nexus or similar) will not be compatible with mods that are on the installers. If you install Bepinex in your Hollow Knight install and use Lumafly/Scarab, then you will have issues, and your game may not function correctly.

You can use Steam's Verify Integrity options to remove Lumafly/Scarab mods, but you will need to follow Bepinex's instructions for uninstalling that instead.

On a completely unrelated note, while messing around with the HueShifter mod I discovered that When sitting next to Bretta (MAY HAVE GOTTEN HER NAME WRONG?) on the bench, since her blush is most likely a different sprite that gets layered over her face, she just ends up with this random stain of color on her face followed by the hue-shifted blush
