HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

  • MoreSaves: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Menu, by going to Options > Mods > MoreSaves

  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

I absolutely would not recommend Nexus for HK. Even though the community doesn't recommend it for either game, you could at least make a reasonable point about it currently being a good source of Silksong mods; but for HK it's a terrible choice

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

  • Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
    • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
    • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
      • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
      • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
  • Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
  • Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
    • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

How to fix Installer Errors

  • Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
  • Make sure that the Installer isn't in your Downloads folder (Desktop or a folder on the same drive as your game install is best).
  • If the installer is in a .zip, then you must Extract it
  • Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • If Lumafly is automatically closing, you may be missing a system file to open it. This is currently easily fixed by running the older installer, Scarab once.
    • -# Note: it's recommended to use Lumafly overall, as Scarab has some long term issues that are fixed by Lumafly.

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

  • "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
    • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
  • Your game patch doesn't match your installer
    • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
    • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
  • Something didn't install correctly
    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
    • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
  • You're on Linux/Steamdeck
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.

I'm having some issues with debug mod in silksong

  • the option to reload the quick save on death seems to have softlocked the save state system, now it just tells me that a save state is loading so I cannot load another one. the game also softlocks when I go to back to menu
  • whenever I load state, it breaks my ability to use plasmium phial (no lifeblood is given, it is not visual) and hunter crest focus (the bar doesn't seem to fill up) until I reload the entire file

on that note, is there a version that can do things like refill flea brew and plasmium phial?

Idk if anyone's already thought about or made this, and idk if this will ever be something that will come to Silksong, but I feel like a really cool thing would be the ability to actually compose and save your own pieces.

At first you can only compose with the Needolin when its acquired but then you can maybe find, collect, or even build new instruments to unlock more options as to what you can compose with.

I feel like all things considered it just makes perfect sense for the game.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
  • In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
  • AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

The issue is expected to happen in vanilla, which is why I was pointing to re-enabling the mod. Your Knight is sitting at a bench that doesn't exist outside the scope of Pale Court and the game tries to load a scene that's not built, which is why you spawn OOB.

You can also save edit your spawn point to appear elsewhere, let me check a proper way to do so.

  • QoL mod | Install
    • If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra file called user#.json (where # is the file number), which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
  • DebugMod | Install
    • While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.
  • Website
    • Find the Save File, upload it to the website, and make the edits. It will Download as save file for Slot 1, so rename it if needed. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information

There are multiple. Randomizer 4 handles items and transitions, Enemy Randomizer handles enemies. They're separate and enemies with geo drops can break item progression if Rando 4 is also enabled. The several other Randomizer mods that appear on the search are mostly Rando add-ons that randomize additional items not covered in the base rando (IE nail upgrades, levers, walls, etc)

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

  • Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
    • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
    • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
      • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
      • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
  • Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
  • Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
    • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

Hollow Knight and Bepinex

Mods installed from external sources from the installers (ie Nexus or similar) will not be compatible with mods that are on the installers. If you install Bepinex in your Hollow Knight install and use Lumafly/Scarab, then you will have issues, and your game may not function correctly.

You can use Steam's Verify Integrity options to remove Lumafly/Scarab mods, but you will need to follow Bepinex's instructions for uninstalling that instead.
