Enemy Randomizer FAQ

Enemy Randomizer is the mod that randomizes Bosses and Enemies. It is considered in Alpha, so you may run into problems when using it, and having DebugMod installed is recommended.

All Enemies are the same‽

The settings do not properly initialize at this time, so you'll need to Pause > Options > Mods > Enemy Randomizer > Modules and turn each module OFF and then back ON.

I only want Bosses shuffled!

You can choose which enemies are shuffled in the mod's menu. The pins of the Enemy Randomizer channel has a list of the names of bosses, as well as a spreadsheet of all enemy names.

Can I use it with Randomizer 4?

You can, but Enemy Randomizer doesn't make changes to the logic, so it's not recommended to use Skips that are enemy related. Additionally, items that come from Enemies may not spawn correctly.

Silksong Modding Update!

It's been over ONE MONTH since Silksong came out!
We want to give the community an update on Silksong modding now that it's been a month and we have more things figured out.

After a lot of discussions and votes, we've decided that we'll be using Thunderstore as a primary place for Silksong mods, and in the not-too-far-future we'll also support a mod source outside of Thunderstore that devs can optionally upload to. This will hopefully make Silksong modding very accessible to both players and mod developers.

At this time we recommend using r2modman or gale to install mods. We are aware these currently don't have MacOS support, and for now MacOS users will need to see #modding-discussion message for installation information . When community installers exist that have proper support for MacOS, we'll be recommending those over the generic Thunderstore installers.

Some info for Mod Developers

  • Please keep an eye on #1427512231955923034 for updates that may affect Developing Silksong Mods!
    • If you are not already in the HK Modding Discord, that is where all Dev discussion happens. You can find the server invite in the pins here.
  • We recommend uploading your mods to Thunderstore and the template will be updated to simplify this process. In the meantime, the installers mentioned above can install a local package to verify it will install as intended.
    • Those who prefer not to upload their mods to Thunderstore will have to wait for the custom solution to be built and an installer that supports it.
    • While you are welcome to upload your mods to Nexus, we will not be recommending Nexus to players. A significant number of players and devs have expressed a dislike of using Nexus, and we plan to keep the Modding ecosystem centered around Thunderstore.
  • You should also be aware of the loader situation: we are working to have better platform support than what BepInEx offers out of the box. We would love volunteers to help with the remaining efforts (which have been discussed in #1413054490621378610 ). There will be some breaking changes in the future, although using harmony for patching game code should reduce the impact of those.

We're trying out new things here, and ultimately want to provide the best modding experience to the players and creators alike! These plans will allow us to look at how Silksong modding is doing down the road and make adjustments as needed for the community. Thank you, everyone, for your patience in this yeeshaw

Various things to know about Modding Silksong on MacOS

  • Savefile Location: ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team-Cherry.Silksong/

Instructions for Modding Silksong on MacOS

  1. Manually Download the Silksong BepinEx and unzip it by double clicking on it
  2. Go to the BepInEx-BepInExPack_Silksong folder, and open the BepInExPack folder
  3. Select and copy everything inside the BepInExPack folder (command + a then command + c)
  4. Locate your Silksong install: In Steam, right click Silksong, select Properties, go to Installed files and click Browse
  5. Paste what you copied earlier in this folder (command + v)
  6. If your finder doesn’t show the file path at the bottom, click View in the menu bar and select Show Path Bar
  7. In the path bar at the bottom of the window, right click the Hollow Knight Silksong folder and select Open in Terminal
  8. Copy and paste arch -x86_64 sh run_bepinex.sh and press enter
  9. You should see a warning about Apple not being able to verify that libdoorstop.dylib is free of malware. Click Done once and temporarily ignore the next popup
  10. Go to system settings, then click Privacy and Security in the sidebar. Scroll down to security, libdoorstop.dylib should appear there, click Open
  11. Go back to the pop up, click Done again, and the next one should have an Open Anyway button. Click it (you may need to enter your password there) then click OK
  12. Silksong should now open. On Steam, make sure to keep your Steam client open, otherwise your saves may not be recognized properly. To open Silksong with BepInEx again later, redo steps 4, 7 and 8, or follow the bonus steps:

Bonus: make Steam automatically open Silksong with BepInEx:

  • In Steam, right click Silksong, select Properties and go to General
  • Copy and paste this into the Launch Options field: "/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow Knight Silksong/run_bepinex.sh" %command%
  • In what you just pasted, replace username by your MacOS username
  • You should now be able to launch Silksong with BepInEx with Steam’s Play button

To install a mod after installing Bepinex:

  1. Find the mod’s Thunderstore page and click Manual Download. Once the download is over, extract the zip you just downloaded by double clicking on it.
  2. In your Bepinex install, navigate to BepInEx -> plugins, and drag and drop the folder you just extracted in the plugins folder
  3. On the mod's Thunderstore page, check the list just below the download button that indicates This mod requires the following mods to function, and install every mod listed here that you don’t already have (note: you already have BepInEx-BepInExPack_Silksong if you followed the Instructions for modding Silksong on MacOS above).

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
  • AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.

I’ve downloaded the zip file containing the various sprites from the game, but I see most of the sprite sheets are assembled into huge atlases that combine as many sprites as possible into a given texture size, sometimes the sprites are also rotated. Is there any documentation about the coordinates of each frame for these atlases, to make it less of a manual process to assemble a given animated sprite?

How to fix Installer Errors

  • Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
  • Make sure that the Installer isn't in your Downloads folder (Desktop or a folder on the same drive as your game install is best).
  • If the installer is in a .zip, then you must Extract it

    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
  • In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

My question was about the fact that some skins come with custom enemy hp bars to use with the Enemy HP bars mod, so I wasn't sure whether you were talking about this or about custom HUDs.
For the latter skins should have the correct structure already when you download them, although beware that the file may have a wrong casing which matters on case-sensitive OSs (Linux), so if you're on Linux make sure that the file is named Hud.png

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. This page explains how you can use other mods and addons to synchronize some aspects, and improve your experience.
