I know that for Unity games, you generally need a modloader like MelonLoader and BepInEx to load mods (I have experience developing MelonLoader mods). But why does hollow knight have its own loader? Is it like an API for devs to gain access to methods easier when they aren’t inherently obvious from just the decompiled code and it runs on BepInEx or MelonLoader? Or is it straight just a standalone loader?

Resources

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

That can mean a lot of things depending on what you want
You have very unobtrusive things like nowalkofshame (you spawn right before where you died) compass always on (compass is just free) steady hand (the map doesn’t update only at benches)

Then you have more wild things which change the game more drastically, you have the easy mod which changes a ton of stuff, or debug mode, which you could use to give yourself more masks, nail damage…

Modding "Xbox Games" versions (Gamepass / Microsoft's App Store):

Note: this is for Desktop/Laptop. You cannot mod the game on Xbox consoles

  • Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
    • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
  • After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files).
    If you have further issues, then please see #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post if needed.

Important paths

  • Save Files: %AppData%\..\Local\Packages\
    • Find a folder in here with Team Cherry in the name.
  • Game Files: C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content\

  • Note: Microsoft manages this install weirdly and syncs its files to inaccessible folders, so changes may need a few minutes to take effect and bugs with installing or uninstalling mods can occur.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

  • MoreSaves: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Menu, by going to Options > Mods > MoreSaves

  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

It looks like your backup was also corrupted. This is a thing that unfortunately just happens with Steam Cloud Saves sometimes.

I've heard of people being able to sometimes get saves recovered from messaging steam support, but I'm not familiar with that process

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.

Is it alright to have a casual modded gameplay after completing the game once? I did the first three endings prior, but I didn't touch godseeker mode and couldn't beat nkg due to laziness and tiredness. (casual meaning with more freedom, like infinite notch slots to mess around with charms and feel overpowered [lore accurate knight])

Im asking coz oft-times, people speak of skill issue to players that complain of difficulty (valid ig), or those that try to lower the difficulty with *cheats", including statements like "The game was meant to be hard. Go play something else if you want a soft game".

It’s a solo game, you can play the way you want. Using mods is generally not recommended for a first playthrough not because they can lower the difficulty but because they make it easy to miss important cutscenes, hidden stuff found by backtracking or can completely change the lore of the game. It’s perfectly normal to not want to do the harder late game content, at this point you can mod the game without missing on the experience

I think the main thing you are seeing in that the knight almost instantly gets to full speed horizontally while walking
It accelerates much much faster than the character in terraria
The jumps of both games look rather similar, THE difference is horizontal acceleration being incredibly low in terraria

As far as I can see both games work the same way, of acceleration (probably linear if I had to guess) into reaching a top speed at which point acceleration stops
Not sure how you would get precise acceleration values

  • Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
    • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.

I know how to do reskins, I have actually changed the night to a Tiny Hornet Knight skin already, my personal favourite is actually just a simple Shade reskin however as I mentioned in my message, Im not looking for just a reskin but more or less a full character change.
||What I mean by this is not just having a Hornet model used instead of the Knight with the attacks looking like that of Hornet's, I would love to see the pogo change implemented such as the diagonal pogo, the dash/sprint from Silksong, the Silk spells etc.||
||This could also come with the double damage that is in Silksong (even though I hate the double damage, its a small price to pay for salvation XDD).||

||Also the reason I would want to see these things in the first game is because the game would go from as we know it to a complete different experience.||
||Down pogo in HKO is pretty much a staple for the game but changing it to the angular pogo would change how you fight bosses, how you would pogo across spikes and much more.||
||Another thought that has come across my mind is Path of Pain, this would change a little because of how dash and pogo both work but it will also become a little easier with the parachute skirt.||

Grimmchild not only does absurdly little damage but it also misses 90% of its shots

Grimmchild does similar damage as a level 3 nail and aims better if you have your back to the enemy so he can he closer to it.

I like grimmchild. Chip damage can absolutely add up and quickly but more importantly he's cute.

I used to use grimmchild to train in the hall of gods. I would do grimmchild only runs, and let him do all the damage while I focused on getting good at dodging.
Every 2 fireballs he lands is around the same damage as a single pure nail strike.

Also he came in really handy when I was playing rando and couldn't find my left and right slash attacks or any pale ore to strengthen my nail lol.
