That will remove all mods. Changes to save files stay changed though, so you may need to save edit.

Editing save files

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

• MoreSaves Mod | Install
• With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the in-game Menu. Either from the Main Menu or Pause Menu, go to Options > Mods > MoreSaves to edit save files in game.
• QoL mod | Install
  • If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra file called user#.json (where # is the file number), which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
• DebugMod | Install
  • While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.
• Website
  • Find the Save File, upload it to the website, and make the edits. It will Download as save file for Slot 1, so rename it if needed. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information

Modding and Achievements

• Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
  • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
  • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
  • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
• In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Note: this is for Desktop/Laptop. You cannot mod the game on Xbox consoles

• Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Download: https://themulhima.github.io/Lumafly?download
  • Make sure that the Lumafly's exe isn't in Downloads. Ideally put it on your Desktop.
• Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
• After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files).

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Unity games look a lot alike. Once you mod a couple, it's mostly about figuring out the game logic of whatever you're working on than the mechanics of the mod.

I dont think this is the right place for this, but is there any way to report bugs for silksong or hollow knight itself? The controller situation in linux is too much. I cant play the game due to what i pressume is outdated SDL2 libraries and the workaround for hk isnt working on ss.
I tried asking in the ss-discussion channel, but it got flooded by silksong, so i have no idea where else to look to

The main development of mods moved to a dedicated server a while back. You'll want to join the Hollow Knight Modding server, then Opt-in to the Dev Channels and Silksong channels

and then get UnityExplorer
it lets you see lots of neat things

It's also not stripped, which is nice

Download DNSpy, or ILSpy.
(Optional: You can point UnityExplorer to DNSpy, for easier access)

The bulk of the game code is in the Assembly-CSharp.dll in the Managed folder, ie:
Open up your game's "Managed" folder, eg: Hollow Knight Silksong/Hollow Knight Silksong_Data/Managed/Assembly-CSharp.dll
The bulk of the assets will be in your Data folder eg: Hollow Knight Silksong/Hollow Knight Silksong_Data/resources.assets. You can view/edit them directly with
AssetStudio / UnityAssetBundleExtractor / uTinyRipper (they're all good at slightly different things)

To make a new mod, you wanna get VisualStudio 2022 Community Edition, and start a new project.
C# Class Library -> .Net Standard 2.1
And then right click Dependencies -> Add Project Reference -> Browse ->
From your Hollow Knight Silksong/BepInEx/core folder, add BepInEx.dll, and 0Harmony.dll
And from your Hollow Knight Silksong/Hollow Knight Silksong_Data/Managed/ folder, add Assembly-CSharp.dll, UnityEngine.dll, UnityEngine.CoreModule.dll,

Fwiw, while there are some mods that are popping up in various places for Silksong, we aren't "officially" recommending modding until there is something more standardized.

Lumafly uses a somewhat curated mod list (mods on it have to be submitted and approved, and can be removed if needed).

We have plans to similarly have an endorsed place for Silksong mods, but that probably won't happen for a bit. We'll probably use Bepinex overall, as that's been the plan for about a year; but we're not sure if we'll use a custom installer, or maybe use Thunderstore. We almost definitely won't use Nexus though.

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

• "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
  • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
• Your game patch doesn't match your installer
  • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
  • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
  • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
• Something didn't install correctly
  • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
  • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
• You're on Linux/Steamdeck
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.
• Your game is cracked/pirated
  • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods aren't considered compatible with pirated copies, which will not get support in the main servers.
  • Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam/GoG/Xbox Games.
  • If you do not have a supported version, please get one and you will get support with modding. Requesting help with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

• Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
  • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
  • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
    • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
    • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
• Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
• Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
  • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

Note: this is for Desktop/Laptop. You cannot mod the game on Xbox consoles

• Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Download: https://themulhima.github.io/Lumafly?download
  • Make sure that the Lumafly's exe isn't in Downloads. Ideally put it on your Desktop.
• Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
• After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files).

Common MacOS Problems & Fixes

Installer cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer:

On MacOS 15 (Sequoia) or later:

• Try to open the app once, then go to the System Settings and click "Privacy and Security" in the side bar.
• Scroll down to the security section. The installer should appear there, click the "Open" button next to it.
• Click "Open Anyway". You might need to enter your password there.
  With an older version of MacOS:
• In the Finder on Mac, locate the app you want to open. Don’t use Launchpad to do this! It doesn’t allow access the shortcut menu.
• Control + Left-Click the app icon, then choose "Open" from the shortcut menu.
• Left-Click "Open".
  • Note: You may need to do this twice, as the "Open" button doesn’t always appear the first time.
    The app is now saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it like normal.

Installer doesn't open correctly on MacOS:

• Right-Click the Installer icon, and select "show contents".
• Go into Contents then to the MacOS folder, and double-click the file with the same name as your installer (Scarab or Lumafly).
  • If that step didn’t start the installer but instead opened a terminal window with an exception saying that the access to a path was denied, you’ll need to run the app as administrator:
  • While in the MacOS folder mentioned above, right-click the folder’s name in the path at the bottom of the Finder’s window, and select "open in terminal".
  • Type the command sudo ./Lumafly or sudo ./Scarab (depending on your installer) in the terminal window then press enter.
  • Type your password, then press enter. The installer should now start.

when you have hkmp skins and load into the game, an id.txt file will get generated, you can type it in the settings when in a server to display the skin. if you want, you can change the number in id.txt and when you relaunch the game, it links that id to the skin

Random question, since I couldn't find anything in a quick search online and on the Discord; I've been trying to set up some Speedrunner vs Hunter games, and I was wondering how I could get the game to remove enemies for the hunters and/or start with Infected Crossroads. I know those were features of older Fireb0rn videos, but I'm not sure if those were simply features of older versions of the mod, or if there's some other way to get those things active.

the mod that handles skin will likely exist one day, no one is currently working on it because people are still playing the game, and if you want to work on it you should probably talk with the original creator of ck, because they are still actively modding the game, and most logically will work on the custom knight equivalent of silksong at some point

• Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Download: https://themulhima.github.io/Lumafly?download
  • Make sure that the Lumafly's exe isn't in Downloads. Ideally put it on your Desktop.
• Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
• After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files).
  If you have further issues, then please see #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post if needed.

How it works

I play on PC but with controller, same rules apply, if I hold right and left and the same time Hornet stands in one place, my desire is to have the last action pressed take over. Say I go right but I press left while holding down right at the same time, I want when I press left my character to go left, not to stop. And when I release my finger from left key, it resumes to going right if I still have right pressed, if that makes sense

Hey everyone!
I wanted to share an idea for a new mod. Maybe someone will find it interesting enough to bring to life.
The idea:
||In the game there’s an item called the Carapace Corset, which allows the character to perform a backward scuttle-like movement. My idea is to take that animation, refine it a bit, and then replace all of the character’s normal movement with it. Instead of walking on two legs as usual, the protagonist would always move like a weaver (spider). The result would feel as if the character is no longer humanoid, but something more arachnid.
I can’t code myself, but I’d be happy to help with ideas, testing, and feedback. If anyone’s interested in creating this mod, I’d be super grateful||

i dont know how much you are intelligent with coding, but a smart person knows that the code published on github is always open source and anyone can read that code freely, i have discovered this community yesterday, and i have already gotten over 500 downloads with 20 stars on the day of release. you are literally telling other people this is malicious, which is a hit to my reputation, i would say, you should read the code yourself, each and every line, and then suggest everyone, rather than just blindfolding your eyes and doing whatever you want, just because you are a higher rank. im a 14 year old teen, and i have no way to earn money rather than freelancing, so i cant pay for the certificate. if you want to, feel free to report the code, because github wont ban me, its legit. if its actually a virus, then i will get banned. just give me the proof. whole code is in front of your eyes. thank you.

i have added support for bepinex, by default now. it installs automatically along with mods.

i just updated readme to get a free workaround with the smartscreen lol, basically now you can unblock .exe and verify with the sha256sum to verify if your digital copy is legit or not, for some dumb people tbh. otherwise the whole code is on repo lol. this will clear all the doutbs from my side, idc about others now.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
• You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:

  • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.

Common issues

• If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
• If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
• If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
  • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
• If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
• Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.
