Bit of a specific question, but I suppose the Linux version of the modloader only works if you run the game natively on Linux. Would I have to do something different if I want to run the game through Proton?
(Running it natively causes some problems with my controller that don't appear through Proton)

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

  • Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
    • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
    • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
      • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
      • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
  • Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
  • Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
    • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

I already saw this, but it wasn't of help for my problem. Running it natively (with Steam Linux Runtime) causes my controller to malfunction.
But that's not really anything to do with the modloader tho so I'll try to figure it out elsewhere

How to fix Installer Errors

  • Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
  • Make sure that the Installer isn't in your Downloads folder (Desktop or a folder on the same drive as your game install is best).
  • If the installer is in a .zip, then you must Extract it
  • Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • If Lumafly is automatically closing, you may be missing a system file to open it. This is currently easily fixed by running the older installer, Scarab once.
    • -# Note: it's recommended to use Lumafly overall, as Scarab has some long term issues that are fixed by Lumafly.

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
  • In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

U can simply copy the dat files to another folder if u want to keep them safe. But if u r asking about loading the backup, then u want to move the files with dat extension out of the folder and remove the bak1 extension of the remaining file

For future reference (and if anyone is trying to revert a steel soul death)
Go to this website and select the save file you had your death in

Hollow Knight:
Change "permadeathMode" to 1 and "soulLimited" to false
You'll have 0 geo. If you want to also get it back, set "geo" to whatever you had before

Silksong:
Change "permadeathMode" to 1 and "IsSilkSpoolBroken" to false
You'll have 0 rosaries. If you want to also get it back, set "rosaries" to whatever you had before

Once you're done, download the file (make sure it's the correct user number) and substitute the files

Hope this helps anyone looking for this

Resources

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. This page explains how you can use other mods and addons to synchronize some aspects, and improve your experience.

"ModLog.txt" can be found in the same folder as your save files (you can drag and drop the file into discord)

  • Open Modlog with Lumafly (you should be able to copy and paste it into Discord)
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team Cherry.Hollow Knight/
  • Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight/
    Note: some mod installers such as Lumafly have an Open saves folder button which allows you to find the ModLog easily. Otherwise, follow the steps below:

To get the ModLog on Windows:

  1. Press ⊞ + R
  • Note: ⊞ is the Windows button, in between Ctrl and Alt on your keyboard
  1. Copy and paste this into it %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight and hit "OK".
  2. ModLog.txt is in this folder.

To get the ModLog on MacOS:

  1. From the Finder, click "Go" in the menu at the top of the screen and select "Go to folder".

Debug Binds

"Every time I [do X] something weird happens!"

  • 99% of the time, this is because you accidentally set a keybind in debug (or are pressing a button that is one of the default Binds). Note that depending what changes you were accidentally making, simply uninstalling Debug won't fix it.

How to fix

  • Pause the game, then press F1 on your keyboard to open the Debug interface.
    • If it doesn't work at first, try pressing Fn + F1. If that still doesn't work, then go to Options > Mods > DebugMod and then you can set a new button to open it
  • The Binds panel will list a few options on each page. If you don't see the problem on the current page, then press the ▶️ at the bottom of the panel to see the next page.
  • When you find the Bind that you want to remove, press the White Circle ⚪ to the right of it, then press Esc on your keyboard to remove the bind.
    • Note: on some resolutions, the binding buttons don't line up correctly with the text, so be sure to check that you're setting the correct one.
  • If you accidentally adjusted your Nail Damage, then you can reset it on the first page of the Binds panel. Find the Reset Nail bind, and simply press the ▶️ to have the action happen once.
    • if you set some other permanent effect, then you'll need to find the appropriate page for it in the Binds panel, and find the action that's the opposite of what you did. Some actions (like having extra Keys) cannot be undone.

Try these separately first, but if they don't work, then you may need to try a combination of them.

  • Use Steam's controller settings, enable Steam Inputs from the game properties, and check controller configuration support through Steam's Big Picture mode.

  • Unplug your controller before launching the game, then plug it back in on the title screen.

nah, launching unmodded won't break anything. Though some mods can make permanent edits to your save file (such as debug mod) so it's recommended you make back ups of your saves before you use any game changing mods.

How to fix Installer Errors

  • Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
  • Make sure that the Installer isn't in your Downloads folder (Desktop or a folder on the same drive as your game install is best).
  • If the installer is in a .zip, then you must Extract it
  • Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • If Lumafly is automatically closing, you may be missing a system file to open it. This is currently easily fixed by running the older installer, Scarab once.

I was doing some P5 runs when I ran into some issues. Some bosses, like Markoth or Gorb, are glitched. For example, Gorb’s swords don’t appear, or when I fought Markoth, his dream shield wasn’t there. So he was just floating around. There are also other problems, like the shockwaves from some bosses not appearing either. It might have been the mods, so I tried disabling them to launch HK without mods, and then my game just kept crashing. After that, I wanted to re-enable the mods on scarab, but none of them were installed anymore. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

What you'll probably want to do is limit your framerate, since by default HK tries to run as fast as you computer can, and the frame rate cap in the options is at 400 fps by default. There are several way to choose a specific cap, you can use Nvidia's control panel, or use the FrameLimiter mod, or edit the default value of the framerate cap which you can find in the file named Config.ini in your game's files

playing with randomizer 4 and i seem to have gotten stuck at the quirrel bench below the city storerooms stag station with no claw/only mothwing - i can only access the royal waterways and can't ascend back to the stag station. I've explored the waterways but can't find any new items without claw, super dash, or dive.

the right side of CoT is locked. my last bench was the quirrel bench, so warping to that doesn't free me.

Unless it changed, most technically Rando 4 only ever expects that you can warp to your starting area at any point. It then stands to reason, that if you can get from your starting point to a specific bench, that you would ofc be able to do that again. (This distinction rarely matters, but there are some situations where it could).

That being said, as long as you have Benchwarp set to only let you warp to "unlocked benches", then you will be playing correctly.

Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
  • AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
  • In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Hiya, I'm looking at maybe adding some missing animations to a skin that hasn't been updated by its creator in a long time. I have seen CustomKnightCreator and tutorials, but all start with a copy of the default textures that have already been split into individual files for each frame. Since I want to start with someone else's skin and add to it, I'd need to split up their custom Knight.png (etc) to make the same files for ckc; is there a way to do this automatically? or failing that, maybe just a map of which sprite on the default sheet is which..?
