Modding and Achievements

• Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
  • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
  • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
  • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
• In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Although there are also custom assets using the Custom PNG, Custom WAV and Custom MP4 tool, which you can just use your own files for.

However, if you want to share a level using custom assets, you need to make sure those files aren't just on your computer and are uploaded somewhere anyone can download them.

Otherwise the level sharer will give an error saying some assets failed to download and the custom objects won't show up.

so, hey, i have a question. i'm running into the issue where it's impossible to play modded hollow knight on a controller since the linux build's controller inputs are broken beyond repair while installing the mod manager on the proton version causes it to fail to recognize controllers at all, and the github page had some people say that installing the windows version of the mod manager and copying the mod API to the proton version on linux worked.

so i'm curious, is there a place where one can manually download the windows version of the Scarab API without having to install the game on a windows computer? i've seen some people post some pictures of a website with a bunch of Assembly-CSharp.dll files labeled as an API or something like that

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

• Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
  • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
  • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
    • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
    • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
• Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
• Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
  • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
• You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
  • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
• For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

I think that might be an interaction specific animation. Hornet has a personality, so she is going to be a far more expressive and animated. I like to call it the Hornet Bitch Slap.

How to fix Installer Errors

• Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
• Make sure that the Installer isn't in your Downloads folder (Desktop or a folder on the same drive as your game install is best).
• If the installer is in a .zip, then you must Extract it
• Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator"
• If Lumafly is automatically closing, you may be missing a system file to open it. This is currently easily fixed by running the older installer, Scarab once.

I never got the steam achievement for beating regular Grimm but I got the one for Nightmare King Grimm.

Common issues

• If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
• If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
• If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
  • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
• If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
• Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

Came across an interesting (but ultimately understandable) issue while getting Custom Knight running on my steamdeck.

I could load several different skins but the Killer Whale (my personal favorite) was only half loading. All the UI, save icons, charms, spells, etc, loaded fine but the Knight obstinately refused to change skins. Double checked that the Killer Whale worked fine on my Windows Desktop, and it ran fine no problems. Then tried my Linux laptop, same issue as the SteamDeck. Turns out in the "fixed" link from the big sheet for the Killer Whale skinKnight.png is actually titled knight.png but because Windows file names are not case-sensitive it still loads, but Linux is case sensitive so it fails. Renaming the file to have the proper capitalization and now it loads on both linux boxes.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
• You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
  • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
• For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

• DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

Extreme, the HKMP dev, is currently working on an update that would sync bosses and ennemies, but it is only in beta yet

closest you can get to syncing bosses/ennemies is using ghosthunter and ESoulLink, or if you support Extreme's patreon, using the beta test version of HKMP 3.0 (note that it still has bugs, and it is even more likely to encounter bugs with Pale Court paired to this beta)

  • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"

  • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.

"Every time I [do X] something weird happens!"

• 99% of the time, this is because you accidentally set a keybind in debug (or are pressing a button that is one of the default Binds). Note that depending what changes you were accidentally making, simply uninstalling Debug won't fix it.

How to fix

• Pause the game, then press F1 on your keyboard to open the Debug interface.
  • If it doesn't work at first, try pressing Fn + F1. If that still doesn't work, then go to Options > Mods > DebugMod and then you can set a new button to open it
• The Binds panel will list a few options on each page. If you don't see the problem on the current page, then press the ▶️ at the bottom of the panel to see the next page.
• When you find the Bind that you want to remove, press the White Circle ⚪ to the right of it, then press Esc on your keyboard to remove the bind.
  • Note: on some resolutions, the binding buttons don't line up correctly with the text, so be sure to check that you're setting the correct one.
• If you accidentally adjusted your Nail Damage, then you can reset it on the first page of the Binds panel. Find the Reset Nail bind, and simply press the ▶️ to have the action happen once.
  • if you set some other permanent effect, then you'll need to find the appropriate page for it in the Binds panel, and find the action that's the opposite of what you did. Some actions (like having extra Keys) cannot be undone.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Modding and Achievements

• Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.

also, this happened in quite a few other bosses (dung/white defender, hiveknight, pure vessel, soul master) and the result was a few seconds of lag followed by the boss instantly dying and a wave of bullets flooding out

but i think radiance breaks the game because its not actually supposed to die?

because its supposed to have hp going into the next phase and finishing cutscene

might also be because i have both lifeblood heart and core on (reduces adrenaline loss upon being hit)

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

• "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
  • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

Lightbringer didn't used to be on the installers, because the version that is out today is a port of the old version, and the person that ported it didn't look into having it added.

Hey, does anyone know if there’s a known bug with something like QOL that spawns the Grimm troupe early but kinda bugs it out? I’ve currently got it in a limbo state where only one of the tents exist at a time, and the main tent thinks I’ve already fought normal Grimm (nkg ready to fight). I havent played it much, but theres a mod called like glimmering realm or something, that would be a good place, It moves some things around, and forgotten ruins is blocked off, you instead go towards where the crystal peaks elevator would be, to adventure into a brand new area. it is fairly difficult, seemingly needing at least basic pogo skips to progress.
