With the Custom Knight mod it works but for when you do an upward slash it changes to the default skin temporarily. I was wondering if thats a bug or if that animation wasnt added,

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player.   • Hollow Point doesn't work on new saves. Save and quit, then reload the save file.
  • Having multiple Gun Class charms equipped can also break the gun.
  • Hollow Point is not compatible with some other mods, such as Pale Court.
  • Despite what the ReadMe says, you do not need ModCommon for it

Healing isn't working!

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

  • "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
    • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
  • Your game patch doesn't match your installer
    • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
    • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
  • Something didn't install correctly
    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
    • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
  • You're on Linux/Steamdeck
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.

My game save somehow reverted it's play time after putting my computer in sleep mode while the game was running, and now my main save says i've played 7 hours instead of the 40 I've actually played. Editing save files

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
    • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s launching correctly the first time. To use both mods at the same time, you must disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see lots of White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying skins in a small/empty room, like a stag station.
  • Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu will only be used for new files.

Hello am trying to install the pale court mod for Hollow Knight on my steamdeck but when I attempt to do so there are these purple squares that show up in the main menu. I took a suggestion I found online which was to use Steam Play None but when I use that the normal Hollow Knight menu loads instead of the Pale Court one and when I go under mods nothing shows there even though I have them installed. Am using LumaFly but also tried Scarab earlier. Its worth noting that the purple squares look very ugly and am trying to get rid of them so I can enjoy the mod without seeing a pixelated mess.

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

  • Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
    • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
    • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
      • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
  • Game crashes when when starting / while playing!
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
  • Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
    • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

It doesn't, mainly because the sprite is handled by the nailUpgrades variable and debug doesn't interact with it (except when resetting to base damage)

I have a question. So as it turns out nothing was wrong with my mods not working. It appears that the only mod that fails to work for me at all when using steam play none is the Pale Court mod. Does that specific mod require a certain version of Hollow Knight to function properely? It seems whenever I try to run it its either purple squares with the Pale Court menu or the menu fails to load entirely showing only the normal HK menu. Other mods such as Custom Knight seem to work fine and load in with LumaFly.

My crystal dash takes longer to charge the longer I have the game open. I thought I'd ask here for a simple fix before posting on #1057825333841240104. No idea what is causing it.

Also, something that may be happening is sometimes hitting enemies does not refill the additional soul vessels beside the big one, while dream nail and soul totems do. But other times it works fine so might be my imagination.

Depends on the boss. Some replace their original version, otehrs have a dedicated statue, others add a switch/dream nail to the original boss' statue

Spritepacker is recommended over CKC. You could edit directly on the sheet but it's not really recommended. The animations are all over the place on the sheet & it's much harder to make things smooth without being able to preview

Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
  • AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Save files are unaffected by lumafly. If you want to “unmod” your game, I think lumafly has a button for “Disable API” or you can verify the game files through steam if you got it there.

The only file lumafly changes is Assembly-CSharp.dll to make it load mod files, otherwise it only adds mod files

It reverts your game to the unmodded state (mod files may still exist, but they aren’t loaded). If you want to delete your mods, uninstall all of them on lumafly.

If you want to go really hardcore on deleting mods, there’s a couple things left behind after that:

  • Mods folder in the hollow knight installation
  • Mod settings files/mod save data in your save files. Again your original save files don’t have mod stuff inside them, but there’s extra files there for mods’ settings and other information they might need to store.

If you want to remove mod settings and stuff from there, I believe you can just delete everything with a .json extension. Those .json files might also have corresponding .bak files (backups), but be careful of deleting unrelated files. Just wondering, why do you want to delete everything? Mod settings files won’t do anything if your game is unmodded, and they don’t take up much storage

What are you trying to do exactly? This mod most likely only works on an older patch (1.4), and there's no release available so you would need to compile it yourself (or to get someone to do it for you). A good amount of its features are also present in QoL, which works on current patch and is way easier to install since it's on the installers

Mods can't work on console, but any mods that make changes to the save file itself, those changes will carry over if your saves are synced

just a quick question about skins. i noticed that a few scenes in hk dont put the modded skin. is it because it isnt possible to mod those parts since its coded as a cutscene or something else?

Almost every scene can be skinned now. Some artists don't bother with making the sprites for scenes that are used all of one time though, and some skins are so old they were made before CK supported what it can currently swap.

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s launching correctly the first time. To use both mods at the same time, you must disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see lots of White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying skins in a small/empty room, like a stag station.
  • Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu will only be used for new files.

Hi, I'm new to HK Modding, but there's a question that I'm really curious about.
Why HK community prefers to use mod loaders like Svarab? Hollow Knight seems like your-average-mono-unity-game that could've theoretically be set up to work with good old BepInEx, why not use it?
