I'm not entirely sure of the requirements for ItemSync to handle unrandomized items to answer the question, but the current version will define the refs only if there's at least one wall randomized, which is already a difference with levers. For future versions the option to have the mod active without randomizing any of the objects will be available, but again, I'm not 100% sure of how ItemSync detects what info to sync or not.

Randomiser and its various connections are an obvious choice, pale court has some great end game content and is one of the biggest and most polished mods ever done
hollow point replaces the nail with a gun, lore master, lost artefact, glimmering realm are all other good mods

You can check the readme of each of those to see what they do, but you shouldn’t use most of them with each other

You can alt-f4 if it just happened and game hasn't saved (guessing its too late for that) or restore q backup if there is one

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

  • MoreSaves: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Menu, by going to Options > Mods > MoreSaves
  • QoL: Opening a save with QOL installed will create an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor
  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

When switching back to current patch you'll need to use Lumafly's "launch modded game" button to get the api back, but your mods will still be there. Be careful not to use Lumafly when on 1221 though

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.

This looks slightly different than some of the other outline issues I've seen with skins, that are usually a white outline that can be fixed by saving in a different way. But you may want to ask in the modding server's art channels as there are a lot of skin makers there

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

  • "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
    • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
  • Your game patch doesn't match your installer
    • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
    • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
  • Something didn't install correctly
    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
    • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
  • You're on Linux/Steamdeck
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.
  • Your game is cracked/pirated hollowpirate
    • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods aren't considered compatible with pirated copies, which will not get support in the main servers.
    • Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam/GoG/Xbox Games.
    • If you do not have a supported version, please get one and you will get support with modding. Requesting help with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.
    • Hollow Knight goes on sale regularly, and you can keep an eye on this website for when it is: https://isthereanydeal.com/game/hollowknight/

i have multiple mods that don't seem to work despite showing up in the mod menu if you pause the game. Those are: Transcedence (see no charm in the one location i grabbed from the spoilers) and Myla-Flower (Can't put down/give the flower)
any advice? the flower mod has all dependencies installed so im a bit out of ideas

it shouldn't just randomly break, but if you have other charm mods as well they may interfere with each other. Or it's possible you're missing a dependency. If you want to troubleshot the problem make a #1057825333841240104 post with the info requested in the FAQ

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
    • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world.
