I would say… a a great deal of the disdain that people have for maths as a discipline at this stage is largely because it demands logical deduction and problem-solving skills that are not developed properly with the more fundamental courses they take prior. There is a greater degree of critical thinking and comprehension that is necessitated by the nature of the ideas being presented, and the problems they beget, which can be quite exhausting (in particular for people who are not already interested or passionate about subjects demanding this skillset). Given that this trend of invoking variables becomes increasingly prevalent as you progress in difficulty with your work, it is not shocking that many of them grow discontent by the time they reach a class like Pre-Calculus, or even Trigonometry.
