My current theory is that these games use the same principles as addictive game but in different ways. Like a popular Not fun game would have something like a high amount of grind being rewarded by meager progress. The progress is decent enough that it makes you feel excited and feel rewarded but so far and few that it is not interesting. Like we drop feed the player a reward weather that be a lvl up or a new item and our brains try so hard to achieve this hard and tedious task that once it is finished we feel accomplished and self rewarded by our own mind. Ill call this method self reward scheme. It is evident in games like CoC and Blox fruits

The second method I have observed is something i'll call dream-bait scheme. Basically a game will implant a dream in to your mind. Weather that be finally upgrading you character to be overpowered or getting the rarest item or getting the most money to give you motivation. This could be done creating a power gap between the rich player or haves and the poor players or the have nots. When there is visible gap between these factions it's leads to the have nots getting hope that one day they will be in the position of the haves creating a impossible dream that is so hard to achieve that that the player put their there day and night into the Not fun activities to reach this self made goal.

The final method i have observed is less about game design and more about the corporate goals behind the game I'll call this market appealing. If a game is marketable and can generate a lot of funds for minimum effort it will become popular faster and will get the corporate support to become more successful. Roblox is by far the most extreme example of this pattern where the games that are fun and innovative lack behind due to their lack of marketability. Also by marketable i don't just mean micro transaction while that is s major contributor other factors are also important. Like the appeal of the game, if it appeals to a wider audience it will be more successful. The games contentability, the more a content creater can sap out of this game the better. And the most important is the acceptability if the game explores in an unsaturated and unique market. This is less about game psychology and more about game marketing but it still is important
