Use the nail inside of the enemies attack hitbox. It won't work unless your opponent wields a sword. It freezes the frame to indicate parrying and plays a sound effect to indicate it further. Parrying is pretty useless though, as most of the time either your or their nailhitbox clips into you or them

That's probably a mod, it's useless in vanilla but if you want to try harder bossfights parrying will come to you eventually
