HK is one of the last games I'd describe as perfect. It was rushed with a measly budget of $75k which meant it had to be released before it was finished and that meant future DLCs (Namely the Grimm Troupe and Godhome) could not be as finely integrated into the map as they would be if they were part of the base game. The former especially is now a ridiculously boring fetch quest broken up by two good bosses.

Like most Metroidvanias it's plagued by very poor and generic enemy design, which wouldn't be too egregious were the combat system not designed in a way where the depth and complexity of combat would necessarily come from intriguing enemies. What we got instead was a hundred or so enemies with very similar behaviors all around and very little attack diversity (What attacks we did get are quite simple to dodge)

Around half or so of the bosses are boring and unengaging and more serve as a way to reward exploration more than anything else. Certain boss runbacks are very bad (Soul master springs to mind) and retrieving your shade often will lock you inside their arena which makes you bash your head against a wall over and over until you succeed instead of exploring and coming back later (Which is what the game teaches you to do after dying to the Mantis Lords)

A boss rush is a very different kind of addition to have in a game like Hollow Knight where exploration tends to take center stage over combat. As far as boss rushes go I think its very fair since it gives you rest stops and the potential for lifeblood/charm switching, and it gave us some interesting new bosses and variations to old ones. One of my personal favorite parts of Hollow Knight were the bosses and for ME I really enjoyed running the gauntlet on them but that game mode isnt for everyone and thats ok!
