EDIT: and i guess spells are better if you get abyssal spells super early and can cheese early game bosses in like ten seconds. nail builds cant ever do that.

but in hog and pantheons where "kill in 10 seconds" cheese isn't really possible aside from no-hit fury flukes strats only god gamers use—nail builds rule supreme for me

You're looking at it all wrong. It's not "nail build" or "spell build". You need to utilise both elements together to be the most effective. Like avatar lightning bending. You use invincibility frames from desolate dive to hit the enemy. You knock the enemy away up and then shriek them. You need the best of all worlds

i say "nail build" simply to refer to any build that doesnt use sstone. apologies, i shoulda clarified i guess. one of my favorite builds (qslash, mop, ustrength, scatcher) use spells alot too, but not running sstone still makes it feel like a nail build.

qslash feels like equal parts both a nail and spell tool. I've used that exact build in a playthrough before, and two other similar builds to that (only replacing stwiter with scatcher in one, and with uheart in the other)—and theyve all felt like spell builds to me.

i think the difference is that im a compulsive min/max'er, but in a hard bossfight or whatnot—survival is more important. alot of the time in nkg or pv i will focus on not getting hit so much that i won't use spells purely because that strays my focus away from not getting hit. with sstone builds that feels like my build isn't really aiding me—so i force myself to use spells to justify the build, even if that means less of my attention is being spent avoiding attacks
