There was a game i finished yesterday called haiku, the robot which was obviously very inspired by hollow knight. Graphics were much different but the gameplay mechanics felt the same. Even the progression seemed identical to hollow knight's in the way that I had to defeat three creators in order to unseal a final boss.
While I do feel that hollow knight has set a very high standard for newer metroidvanias the people who develop them shouldn't be afraid to make their own creative concepts that separate their games from that inspiration.

And while the accusations of it having "copied" Hollow Knight seems ridiculous at first it's actually a pretty reasonable criticism. It has Focus, some of the weapons behave very similarly to spells, there's a Charm that basically copy-pastes the Soul mechanic and the Charm system in general is more or less copied over. But unlike HK, the combat is hot garbage. There are like five enemy types (with everything being a recolour), stupid gauntlets every five seconds, and if you thought HK Charm balance was bad then oooh boy you're in for a treat.

Ori 1's combat was also a fucking disaster but at least the devs acknowledged that and made combat encounters few and far between.

Ori 2 is like "oh HK is a good game, let's take all of its systems but not even try to balance anything and lazily copy paste enemies, that'll be fun!"

Hell, they even gave Ori a bargain-bin version of TK's nail

To top it all off the game was literally broken at launch and it took them several patches to actually make it playable

Half of those patches didn't even fix anything

2 is considered to be a good low risk/small scale game in a way that the world is not at stake, and youre just doing stuff in a localized city trying to make sure it doesnt rip itself apart

unfortunately from what ive heard it suffers from a 9 month developement period and theres tons of reused asset which is the main issue
