I think the only one that for sure hornet basically can't leave out of with our current understanding of the hollow knight universe is the sealed siblings ending. in all the other endings she just isn't present and wouldn't be affected by the outcome in a way that would kill her or would theoretically be able to leave. the only real way for her to leave the sealed siblings ending is probably to get the dreamnail from the knight and then dreamnail herself, which I'm pretty sure goes against something somewhere

Why ‘competing’ against sales of other games is wrong:

Hollow Knight was little-known and released between Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn and did so with little initial success. However, the game gained speed over time to become what it is now. Indeed Team Cherry’s ONLY intent was to be able to make enough money to continue making games, and they’ve accomplished this- even keeping HK around 15 bucks or so.

Nothing actually needs to “compete” anymore thanks to the lack of physical sales. An age ago, you needed to ensure that you had enough sales on day one to make back the investment even making the dang things, but now that it can sit on an eshop for the next 50 years, TC is golden. Keep in mind they’re still 3 people, and don’t need nearly as much money to simply “continue making games” as they put it.

If you need to CHOOSE between a game (BOTW or SS) then nothing is stopping you from simply buying one of those games LATER (see point 2). I think they’re different enough from each other ANYWAYS that they’re not directly ‘competing’ so there’s also that.

the reason hollowknight was a success is by all means a fluke. it's an incredibly good game, I am not denying that at all but many, many incredible indie games have gone below the radar simply because they weren't lucky in the word of mouth rng game. for an example, take the rpg oneshot. it is an rpg that is as good if not better in many ways as undertale, but undertale got lucky and it didn't, leading to it doing significantly worse than undertale in every way.
for your point "it doesn't matter if there are no physical copies", that doesn't matter at all. by all means, unless you were literally in debt for creating those physical copies, there is no reason that you should go bankrupt then instead of making your money back later. however, the amount of copies sold at once will directly impact the amount of total sales
first off, there are many people who only have money enough to buy one of the two games in any given scenario unless one is free, which, of course, causes a loss in initial sales. and although, yes, people can buy it later, the amount of hype created "later" by the game already being out is miniscule in comparison to the hype created on launch day if it is bought by a million people. with high numbers on the launch day, week, and month, it encourages the people who bought it to speak up about it being good, and if the sales are split then both of the two games have significantly less hype. also, people are only obsessed with one game at a time generally speaking, so if the two games are chosen by half the people at launch and bought at a later date, the games will also have half the amount of sales at the later dates generally, and as previously established, people are less hyped if there are less hyped people around them, so the amount of popularity around a game increases exponentially with the amount of sales at a single moment instead of the total sales overall.
this generally leads to both games being stunted in sales both initially and over time.

Going backwards in the images, the one with no steel decorations around the circular spool, you see the early-game, base horizontal spool length. That is hornet's base silk capacity and the amount of silk required to heal 3 masks. That amount is likely consistent as you earn silk-spool upgrades, as shown in the second last image, where the spool with more adornments has a notch to mark that exact base-spool length and quantity of silk.

We've seen in other footage that, when the circular spool is full, a section of the horizontal spool light up, representing the quantity of silk required to heal 3 masks. In the first two images, there is a clear notch BEFORE the base silk-heal amount on the horizontal spool, and the amount of silk highlighted (ready to be used to heal hornet) is the same as that reduced notch. You can see the circular spool be smaller in those first two images, partially covered by steel. Hornet also has two different crests equipped in either image, letting us know that the mechanic covering the circular spool, reducing the amount of silk required to heal, is crest-agnostic. What does this tell us? there could be a charm reducing the silk required to heal and heal value... or.. silksoul mode 👀
