Well, I think it's best to think of a "protagonist/antagonist" scheme rather than a hero/vilain scheme in the first place. The one who's the main character, the one who's against the main character. It's up to the player to interpret which one is the hero, and which one is the villain.

the two things I seem to gravitate towards most in stories are almost polar opposites in terms of vibe, I gravitate towards stories with interesting settings and worlds, especially ones that have extensive history and lore especially if those things are present but not overly explored, just mentioned off hand and present but I don't like when stories go out of their way to explain all the history and mechanics of the world because imo it flattens it and makes it boring

the other thing I gravitate towards is interesting characters, especially interesting characters who interact in interesting ways with other equally interesting characters, I want to learn who these people are, what they want what they like, who they hang out with and all the stuff that comes with that, I'm a massive sucker for it
