It's impressive enough already for someone to learn how to code, it takes a lot to do that. Pixelart is not an artstyle but an art form that can take many shapes, it can be enough to convey the simplicity of a game's mechanics without requiring to spend actual years studying art. I think pixel art is a good compromise for indie devs, especially for solos and small teams, it's cheap and effective from a gameplay point of view
